John
Check with your state DEP or look up on Internet you may only need to apply for a license or permit to hold onto Sandy. There may be some requirement like fencing medical care and I'm sure a permit fee. If that is the case you will not have to worry about loosing sandy.

By the way my wife and I are enjoying the post and always look for photos.
Thanks for sharing.

I also am following along and enjoying. I have raised up a host of wild animals. Even had my share of snakes...some poisonous...when I had my terrariums. I have discovered there are different kinds of intelligences in the animal world. Some may not be "smarter", than others...only different. Just as with us humans now, and our ancestors a thousand years ago. I think that is a great thing you are doing Raspy, as well as a great learning experience. Don't let the ne'er-do-wells discourage you.

Two thumbs up to Raspy!

My wife and I have rescued all sorts of critters over the years... but never a coyote! So, we are enjoying this thread!

You folks are A-OK in our book!

Thanks for all the great comments. It's good to see the caring side of my friends here.

Sandy is showing more of her developing personality. She has some distinct personalities she can display.

One is a very docile and loving little girl that just loves to be touched.
Then she can be playful and mischievous. Into everything and full of imagination.
Then she becomes tired and cranky. Her wolf kisses become more dangerous.
Then she can be scared and aggressive. Biting is likely.

We drove about 250 miles tonight with three dogs and a cat in the car. Sandy was pulling papers out of my bag and chewing them, then pulling stuff out of my shirt pocket to chew. They were all trying to get organized in the back seat and we heard an occasional snap. We stopped up in the high country by a river and the dogs jumped out to go exploring.

She is becoming more of a handful and not always as docile as before, plus bigger. But she is not the alpha dog and gets shown her place every day. I think it's because she has no social graces and just runs over the other two until they get fed up and snap.

Yesterday our neighbor came by with his dog Gus. A very robust vizsla that is full of energy. Sandy has her eyesight now and was upset. The other dogs like Gus and get revved up when he comes to visit. Previously our terrier would protect Sandy from Gus, but this time Sandy was ready to kill and needed no protection. See the pix.

The first one is her at peace at home
The next one is playing with Bei Bei, our terrier
The next ones are dealing with Gus. Wow!

The last one really shows the how developed her eyes are and her dependence on them. Just last week her eyes were still foggy looking and she used them mainly for light sensing, but not for wary viewing. Not with the kind of clarity she has now.

I was wondering how she was going to handle new people and other animals not in her pack. I think that is going to be a big obstacle and that she may not be "socialiazable"(yes I made that word up, but it makes sense to me;))

I have a Chesapeake Bay retriever. After raising Goldens and Labs I wanted something different....and boy is he. Very leery of new people...until he gets to know you, then he can be a pest. That's the opposite of a lab or golden, but what a machine on a retreive....very impressive.

I have had Labs, and other breeds, (Dalmation, Chow, etc). I now have German Shepherd. This guy is nothing like the other dogs I have ever had. Not laid back and very intelligent, and leery of new people, too. Good qualities, I think. I am hooked on the breed. In a way kinda like the little coyote...

Redbug good choice with the German Shepard what you will find with him is the More time you spend with him and more work the smarter they become. As a police officer I had a K-9 partner for several years and that dog was one of the smartest I have ever seen. During training we were told that the GSD has the mental capacity of a 5 year old child.
They are protective of there "pack" family, leery of new people is good but they need to be socialized to prevent an accident. They should accept strangers. Best of luck with the best breed in my humble opinion.

Hey man,
thanks for the pics, keep em coming
This is an important thread for a lot of people. Everyone is affected by coyotes these days and it seems to me they are going to be a bigger part of our lifestyle in the future.
This makes it easier to understand their part in our/the environment.
Things are going to start changing fast for you now so it's important to document.
hang in there:thumbsup:
