Problem: Intermittent starting issue 4520
Symptoms: Key on, fuel solenoid pulls in. on move key to "start" Gages cycle and the tach gage starts "ticking" one a second increasing reading each time. No starter function.

Tests: Battery above 12 Volts holds voltage during attempt to start. Battery posts clean and tight Ground cable attachment sound. Voltage at starter terminal 6 volts.

Troubleshooting: Using a needle probe through insulation on battery cable , found 6 volts 1/2 inch from positive battery terminal.

Replaced end on cable and no more problem.

Examination of faulted part: The factory potted end looked good, but on cutting it open it had corrosion inside and was not making good connections. Many of the copper wires had deteriorated to nothing.

Poor connections on battery terminals, spade lug terminals, and mate-n-lock (in line) connectors and other styles of connectors have caused MANY intermittent issues over the years for a lot of people, and some never get totally figured out. Some of them can be very hard to debug or diagnose, though.

Nasty, nasty problem. Congrats on figuring out rare type of failure.
