There rake bar rotation is ground driven from the front wheels. To keep rake bar rotating while turning a corner front wheels are in fixed position and rear wheels caster. This is a late model has rubber tires. Dad's John Deere model was steel wheels.

Yes, when I was a kid, we had an old side delivery rake like that with the steel wheels.

I'm also thinking it might of also had a steel "tractor" seat (pan) on it, perhaps once pulled by horses?

Many years ago, when I used to do hay, that is very similar to the rake I used. After getting out of the livestock business, I couldn稚 sell it, so I hauled it to the local auction. Got a whole $65 for it. Never again.

Looks like a good winter restoration project, gotta find something to do in the cold and rain.

My dad uses a rake just like that. Yours is in better condition than his.

It looks in good condition, do the tines rotate still? They handle the hay gentley and make good fluffy rows to finish drying the hay and are very agile to use.

We had the steel wheel version of this one and it raked a lot of hay behind our JD420 - I broke the rake gearing going too fast through a drain swale in the field @ 13 yrs old and my dad got the parts and the next day I tore it apart and fixed it - it was rusty but got it fixed.

Moral of the story - you break it you fix it was the way it worked on the farm.

You joke about that, but dad is wondering what happened to the old square baler. He is thinking that it might still be in the back pasture, which we haven't even started working on clearing back there yet.
