From what I have read, their oil filters are not the greatest.

The issue is Fram oil filters, mostly. Even though I was a user of Fram oil filters for over 20 years, the information provided by various studies and websites have convinced to me not purchase Fram oil filters in the future. Good, relatively unbiased info concerning oil and air filters is Bobistheoilguy.com. There is an on-going thread on Fram air filters you might be interested in, as well as an ISO standard air filter study that measured actual performance of several air filters in a Duramax diesel truck engine. Oddly enough, Fram was not one of the brands they tested.

Two or three years ago Fram came up with the marketing idea to glue basically SANDPAPER to their oil filter canisters for "easy off" convenience. From my point of view, whatever that "grit" is on the grip, it does not belong in the material list for the manufacture of an oil filter.

I think all oil filters should come with a cellophane cover over the business end, such as New Holland and many of the other OEM brands.

Hi,

After Allied signal bought FRAM, the started going down the tiolet. Low quality, I would not use them on a $500 winter beater, never mind a good vehicle or tractor!!

Take care

Will

My brother works at Fram on the oil filter line, and he said that after Allied Signal bought them, every corner was cut to make them cheaper to be able to sell them to Walmart and other discount stores. Everything inside the filter was made thinner and out of lower quality materials. Everyone at the factory is totally disgusted with the situation, as their reputation is going in the dumpster. But as long as people keep buying them, I don't see any changes coming.

I see a lot of post about how shatty Frams are. Where there is smoke, I hesitate to use my motor to see if there is fire. The only actual test of oil filters I have seen on the web is at http://www.oilfilterstudy.com/. A guy with a hacksaw can't tell you how well a filter work (ei, how well it filters the oil). I need to know how well it cleans oil. I use syn. motor oil, moble1, at 5000 mile changes. Using a $2 oil filter for $30 worth of oil seems wrong. If I use Fram (which is on both my trucks right now) it is the $10 XG series.

So in short, oil filters is not were I chose to save money.

I quit buying them several years ago, for the above reasons. I use Wix, Purolater, or Mobil 1 now.

The decline in quality at the Fram factory after the Allied Signal takeover is only part of the problem. The other problem is that Fram is one of the most commonly counterfeited oil filters. If you think the quality of the real Fram is low, wait till you get ahold of a fake.

Counterfeit goods is a real problem. Many of the 'grade 8' bolts available are fake, too.
