Freak Tragic bushhogging incident killed a local farmer

That is a sad story. Usually for every death there are thousands of injuries giving a hint of the danger. Guess we all know brushhogging is dangerous but wouldn't think to that degree. What can you say? Seems like a freak accident.

Up until very recently, I used to think my grandpa was just a crazy ole' bird for wearing a WWII helmet when he bush hogged.......

It's amazing how much smarter they seem the older I get!

The guy was about 40, I knew him fairly well, know his mom and dad and brothers. He was bushhogging and a piece of debris came out from underneath about the size of a .22 bullet and right into his brainstem. Guessing near a 70-100 hp open station tractor, front chainguards on the mower, don't know very many more details but the guy was fairly safe around equipment and had been on it all of his life.

One of those thing that sitting here thinking about it it is totally unpreventable.

Bird hunter, I am sorry to hear you lost your friend also. I worked with Tommy. One of our best officers and the whole institution has been greatly affected by his loss. I have even had a number of inmates approach me and tell me they were sorry to hear about the accident. Tom grew up on equipment and I am certain operator error was not to blame. This was one of those 1 in a million scenarios and just proves none of us know when our time will come.
We have been having prayer for his family and especially the girls every night before roll call. We lost a good one.................. visitation was tonight and his service is tomorrow at 1;00pm with Honor Guard.

Most of the county tractors that are out mowing along the roads around my home have a plexi glass shield mounted on the rops. You would think after mowing along county roads and ditches for 5 month out of the year you would want to have some type of protection behind you. Even with the chains on my rotary cutter, I have heard stuff hitting the back of the tractor when running over un-even ground.

It's surprising how much a grass burr, acorn or sweetgum ball can hurt when it hits you on the back at 100 mph.

I thought the county mowers have plexi to stop object thrown from passing cars. Which is sad from a whole different perspective.

And right now, they're mowing along I-35E in my neighborhood, but they're using nice, 4-WD, air-conditioned cab John Deeres with their bat wing mowers.

Talked to a good buddy of his yesterday and it was determined it was actually a fence steeple that went into his brainstem. What probably happened is the mower caught a wire and ripped the wire out of the post and sent the steeple flying through the air like a bullet.

What are the $%^&*() odds of that happening and killing someone......

for most of us here, that like to be preventative, this is hard to swallow.......there wasn't much more he could have done.....
