Fred cain field cultivator/ripper?

I posted my question in the operator/owner section of this board with little response to my question.I am about to purchase a Fred cain 85 inch 7 shank field cultivator/ripper from everything attachments.Do I enough HP with Kioti dk40 hst to pull this field cultivator in unworked ground(sandy with some rock)?I have loaded ag tires.Thanks for any info.

Your DK40 should have plenty of power in low gear, I've never pulled one though, heck wind er up to pto speed and let err eat, it will either pull it or spin the tires, on the video he said you could drop a couple tines off if it was spinning. Dunno about the rocks, weather it would hook them and anchor you, I have clay and alot of rock, in the summer its like rocks set in adobe, they don't move.
I watched that video on the EA site it should pull it every bit as good as that Kubota, you have a heavier tractor, It looked like they had the seven tine unit behind the kubota.

I'd do the knock test on the sides of your rears and make sure thy have plenty of juice in them, make sure they are up to the top of the whee,l or you can use a infrared thermometer gun and shoot the side of the tire is see the liquid level.

You also have the option of putting a 5 to seven hundred pounds in the bucket, just enough for more weight on the front end without levering anything off the rears.

Sounds like fun, wish I could plow my rocks:confused2: If your ground is workable you should have enough tractor IMO

Well I ended up buying a bush hog brand 85 inch 7 shank field cultivator/ripper at a local farm store for about the same price.Should be here in about 2 weeks.I will post pics on how it works.

I, too, am considering the chisel plow from Everything Attachments.

How has the Bush hog version worked for you?

And, what soil conditions do you have?

I'm considering such a tool to loosen up and lightly till compacted, sandy loam and "old field" growth.

I have a 66", five shank, Dirt Dog Field Cultivator, which I pull behind a Kubota L3560. The Dirt Dog and Fred Cain appear identical.

My Kubota, bare tractor, weighs 3,500 pounds. Your Kioti, bare tractor, weighs 3,850.

From my experience, with loaded tires, you will be able to pull five shanks or six shanks through unworked ground with some rock. I believe seven shanks will stall you out, IF YOU ARE PULLING AT 10" DEPTH. Shank assemblies are reputed to be easy to adjust for spacing between tines and remove. I have never done so.

These are tough implements, overall, however the replaceable, bolt-on points can snap off. I have snapped off two in two years, in Florida unworked, rock-free, sandy-loam. Replacements are available on e-Bay. Use new #3 X 1-3/4" plow bolts if/when you replace points. (Points inevitably loosen at first. Check for tightness every half hour or you will lose some in the dirt.)

Moisture in the soil decreases resistance.

Real Chisel Plows are heavier in construction than Field Cultivators, generally require minimum 100 horsepower to pull.

Designs are similar. Both are conservation plows.

Field Cultivators are one of the first four implements designed by Harry Ferguson for the tractor Three Point Hitch, which Ferguson invented.

Thank you, Jeff for your replies. The "field cultivator" and "chisel plow" certainly appear, in photos, to be very similar in design. I suppose, therefore, they serve similar purposes - perhaps, if not in degree.

For what purposes do you use the tool?

Yet, I read it takes 10 h.p. per shank........somehow, I wish we could have an easier time distinguishing between facts and opinions.
