Anyone got a link to a free/ez to use dvd player software for a pc? My wife just called and tried to play a dvd on her laptop ( yes.. has dvd drive.. ) and she said she couldn't find any software in windows for it.

Any ideas where to download something... I can get onthe internet/dsl with the laptop so a large file is ok.

thanks for any help.

I'm surprised that there is no dvd software on it...???

VLC worked fine.

Funny thing is.. windows video decoder 'checker' does not show VLC as a dvd decoder.. yet it reads a dvd disc -JUST FINE-

Old Bill needs to keep working on the code I see...

Didn't her computer have Windows Media Player installed? It plays DVDs just fine on all of our PCs.

As I said.. Her system reports that media player does not have the dvd decoder plugin. When i go to get the plugin.. there are 3 listed at the microsoft site.. all pay items. I can't see paying for it.. when i already paid for windows.. and it shoulda come with one already.. ( sp2 IS installed.. )

Perhaps you have media center edition?

Be very careful when downloading a codec package for a DVD player software. There lies a common resource for maliscious software (Malware) that will wear your computer out until you figure out how to remove the Malware. If so inclined, do a search on Smitfraud (as an example of a nasty malware now in circulation) and see how this is impacting one's computer.

Upon downloading any codec package, leave it zipped or rared and allow an anti-virus / anti-spyware program to scan the zip or rar prior to extracting. Once extracted, also do another scan prior to executing the codec load.

I just spent the last few days going through this very computer hijack episode. It's some nasty stuff.

Power DVD is also an excellent software for DVD playback and multiple format capability.

In addition, there is a new round of emails with malicious links that is
making its way to the inbox of many folks. If you haven't gotten one
yet, just give it time. Here is quick summary of what has been found.

The subject line that we have gotten examples
of have all been identical. You may have gotten something else.

"Subject: You've received a postcard from a family member!"

If you do not know the origin of an e-mail specifically, do not open it or any associated link within the mail, if opend prematurely.

This is merely an opinion of advice from my experiences. Take it or leave it, but once you experience a malware intrusion, you'll be a believer. These embedments go directly to your registry and harbor there. You'll know immediately upon web browsing when pop-up pages keep hi-jacking your computer, along with other interruptable characteristics on your computer.

I suspect WinXP.

Soundguy,
PM me for a look at PowerDVD, if you please. It is a standalone software (non-Bill Gates) but it works very nicely with convenient features and controls.

Yeah, good advice. I went through that scenario about a year ago. It just about drove me nuts until I found SmithfraudFix.

Sorry, didn't catch that.

Try this site...

|MG| Free Download - Vista Codec Package 4.4.6

It is a codec pack that should take care of any problems with Media Player.

So did I.
Until he mentioned SP2.

Why would mentioning Service pack 2 make you -not- think it was XP?

For 'home' edition.. I think SP2 -is- the current version...

Cause I don't remember downloading a "SP2" for XP, but I know I did for 98.

Now I'm guessing my copies of XP already had the "SP" stuffed in it.

Go to start, control panel, system, On the 'general tab' the 'system' info is displayed at top.. it will tell you the os maker, then type, then version info, then service pack level.. for instance..

Microsoft XP
Home edition
version 2002
Service Pack 2
