Really /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif Gasoline has a flash point of -40 degrees C (-40 F) Just because we use gasoline everyday does not make it safe, in fact gasoline if pretty dangerous stuff. It has one of the lowest flash points which makes it VERY easy to ignite.

Flash point is the lowest temperature at which a liquid can form an ignitable mixture in air near the surface of the liquid. The lower the flash point, the easier it is to ignite the material.

Here are some chemicals and flash points in (oC). Acetone -18, Benzene 11, Butyl alcohols 24-29, Ethanol 12, Methanol 10, Toluene 4. Gasoline has a flashpont of MINUS 40F!

If you are going to "PLAY" with this stuff do it outside with a lot of ventilation. If the vapors collect and find a place to ignite it will result in a flash fire or explosion. Remember with 99% of flammable liquids the vapors are heaver then air so will be at your toes.

Bottom line be SAFE when playing with flammable liquids. Do not become too complacent and know the hazards and what can happen. It will all be over in a few seconds if you make a mistake. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Burning to death has to be the one of the worse ways to go, a lot of pain and usually takes a while before you die. I have a few firefighter friends burned in a fire. They did not die but the months of treatment and loss of fingers and ears was not something I would like to see anyone go through.

If bio diesel really can be produced cheaper than petro diesel, then someone will be enterprising enough to make it for those of us who are too busy or lazy to make our own. If we can make it a little cheaper in back yard quantities, we should be able to make it a lot cheaper comercially if the government will keep their money-grubbing hands off.

Although oil prices are expected to drop well below the recent record highs, any little upset in the chain will send prices right back up there. So, I'm looking forward to the sweet smell of bio diesel exhaust coming out of my stack in the next few years. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

PS: Even the cold weather viscosity problem will be beaten when enough money is thrown at the problem!

I didn't say gasoline was safe. I said methanol is probably no more unsafe than gasoline. I also said I did mine outside due to safety concerns. Might oughta read posts a little better before replying with angry faces.

The entire biodiesel industry is a government special interest taxpayer funded and supported PR project due to the fact that no one has yet to make a profit on biodiesel. Without the government subsidies to the porkchopper politicans, there would be none available commerically whatsoever since it does not pay for itself, ie it is not profitable.
