2# of Ice is a very small amount (about 1 quart). When filling iced tea glasses, perhaps a cup full to the glass and then 8 glasses and your ice maker is empty for the day. Lots of families need more than 8 glasses of ice per day.Who uses that much ice ?
For cooler ice, we fill half gallon plastic milk cartoons with water and freeze them in our chest freezer. It's not ice cubes or chips, but it works for keeping things cold and dry. It's good for the chest freezer to always have a decent amount of material in it anyways and our food load varies quite a bit.
When we built are home we bought a Kenmore fridge and a separate matching freezer. They make a kit that joins them and makes them look like one big unit. You need some wall space but it sure saves on the knees not going down in the basement to the big chest freezer!
Saved about $8000 doing it that way. The subzero or Wolf was about $11,000. Im sure there stuff is real nice, but cold food is just cold food. That is actually a good way to do it if you have the space, and I bet it's a lot better price than going with a big Viking/Wolf unit.
