Freezer on the Bottom Refrigerators

Who uses that much ice ?
2# of Ice is a very small amount (about 1 quart). When filling iced tea glasses, perhaps a cup full to the glass and then 8 glasses and your ice maker is empty for the day. Lots of families need more than 8 glasses of ice per day.

For cooler ice, we fill half gallon plastic milk cartoons with water and freeze them in our chest freezer. It's not ice cubes or chips, but it works for keeping things cold and dry. It's good for the chest freezer to always have a decent amount of material in it anyways and our food load varies quite a bit.

We do the same for camping coolers but drink coolers get the cubes. Also when there's a ton of kids over using the pool the icemaker gets a workout.

We also have a Samsung french door with the freezer on the bottom. My wife and I both have some back issues but bending over to get something from the freezer is not an issue. We do not have the in-door water or ice dispenser but do have the cube maker/drawer in the freezer compartment. Our well water tends to get coloform in it so we drink bottled water therefore we do not use the ice cubes. I guess the maker still works, not sure. We don't have issues with ice cubes flying out of it.

Without looking for the reciept, I would have to say we have the fridge about four years with no issues. Though given the reviews (on Samsung as well as pretty much every other make) we chose to purchase the extended warrenty. Anyway, very quiet, very easy to live with storage arrangements.

When we bought the house, the five year old side by side came with it. POS died at about six or seven years. I would never buy a side by side after having one.

When we built are home we bought a Kenmore fridge and a separate matching freezer. They make a kit that joins them and makes them look like one big unit. You need some wall space but it sure saves on the knees not going down in the basement to the big chest freezer!

That is actually a good way to do it if you have the space, and I bet it's a lot better price than going with a big Viking/Wolf unit.

Having worked in the appliance service industry as an appliance service manager,I recommend that you do plenty of research on whichever model you decide to purchase. Check out the reviews on the internet on each particular model. There are pro's and con's to each model, for example the meat and cheese drawer layout. Many models have full width drawers that require both doors to be completely opened to gain access to the drawers. Shelf adjustments for larger item's etc. Many models have less than stellar ice maker capacities, many customers complain of loud unit's.

The store I worked at used to sell mainly Whirlpool, and Frigidaire, and we supplied warranty service work for several national box stores in our area. Imo I would definitely stay away from Frigidaire Gallery series. Every time one would leave the showroom I would cringe, as it usually meant I would have an irate, unhappy customer in a matter of hour's,day's, or week's.I have been out of the service end for about a year and a half so it might have changed but from what I hear it's still a crap shoot.

I've had units that never made one batch of ice, units that I replaced ice maker's and control board's on numerous times from manufacturer recommendations trying to make it work. and spent many hours on the phone to tech line's and customer service trying and recommending a buy back on the customer's behalf. The ice maker option for the freezer drawer seemed like a viable option for the reduced ice production of the main ice maker. only to have about 50% of them leak so bad that the freezer drawer would freeze shut and I couldn't get them open making service impossible. Nothing make's a customer more happy, than telling them they are going to have to move everything out of their nice new, shiny $2600.00 fridge and unplug it for a week so the service man can get it opened.

Saved about $8000 doing it that way. The subzero or Wolf was about $11,000. Im sure there stuff is real nice, but cold food is just cold food.

We almost went this route but the ice and water in the door was a deal breaker for me. I use that ice and water dispenser constantly. It looks very nice though and the price is right too.

It's interesting to read about all the discussion / complaints about the ice makers on the door. I have never had one like that. With all the complaints, there is no way I ever would want one. It bad enough that these appliances are being made not to last. I wouldn't want to add on to that a feature that by far is the most likely to break down. It's too easy to make ice in our freezer. I don't need an unreliable machine to add complexity to the task.

I guess this is just one of those things that if you've never had it, you won't miss it.
