My wife has a fellow trainer in the horse industry who has a trailer puller for sale and we were wondering what you guys can tell us about them. It's a Freightliner Sport Chassis with a Cat/Allison drivetrain. I think there are a few of you out there in TBN land who have something similar and was wondering what you knew about them.

Hello Blue. Ya, been gone a while but all is well. My internet is here at work and we've been swallowed up by one of the bigs and just pacing myself on my internet usage. I've had to limit some sites and just use it mainly for work. I've checked in from time to time but haven't done any posting is a while. All well with you and yours down in Blue river country? Hope so.

Great combination, if needed. Price looks reasonable too. How big of a trailer (4+ LQ ??) before you really need a tow vehicle of that caliber? Our volunteer rescue squad bought some M2 chassis and they have been much more reliable than the Ford 450's they replaced.

Yes, I really could have used it back when we had our 4H w/ LQ but we also down sized. We've got a trailer more in line with our needs and our F250/7.3L/6spd combination. BTW, if you know of some one looking for a puller like this (Freightliner) pass this on to them. I'm sure the price is negotiable and I'll vouch for the condition and use. It's in the OKC, Ok vacinity. Thanks.

I know that depending on the rear axle rating and braking system, they can be rated to tow similar loads as an F450 or F550. don't let the size fool you.

We have the IH version with a 20K rear axle, and airbrakes and it is very stiff down the road. Not quite as bad as our F550, but close. Tow rating on ours is 40K.

I think I'll look into the tow rating and braking. I'm not sure of the weight or the trailer they've used it for other than it was something like a 6H + living quarters going to competitions.

I actually looked into one of these for our planned 5 horse living quarters trailer i was going to buy....

1. All the ones i found were 2x4... i HAVE to have 4x4 where i live
2. The combined weight of truck and trailer would have required me to get CDL and i just dont want to mess with that. The insurance issues alone were discussed with my agent....not for me.

but i guess it all varies with state your in.

I ended up getting a non livings quarters trailer, so i dropped the idea of that rig.

Neato. Freightliners are cool tools.

Saw this K-wopper rig while visiting Placerville's Apple Hill area last Nov

Big trucks, big maintenance. Price out things like tires, oil changes, air filters, and batteries alone. Heck, my F350 cost 50% more per mile when compared to my Nissan Titan even though the F350 gets 17 mpg vs 14 mpg for the Titan.

Uh huh. Maybe 20 quarts of oil, filters pricey but less than Ford oem, 30 qts of coolant, double air filter will run 100 bucks. Get stuck on "snot" even with a locking rear, pricey injectors. On the other hand, way up on the cool factor.

Looks like the listing is on horsetrailerworld. Always plenty of Freightliners on there so there are plenty of comparisons for pricing.

Have a friend with a frieght liner that's all tricked out, for his race car hauler and it rides better than my 3500 or f450 and it pulls nice. As a plus he gets 8mpg loaded which seems good for the size of trailer its a double stack with sleeping room.
Just wish I had reason to have they are nice.

Howdy,

Frieghtliner's are nice. It has a lot more pulling power Light Duty trucks. I looked at all the other options out there. The best way is to buy something in the medium duty class truck.

And how many PTO options do either one offer?

The ambulances we have use 36 qts.of antifreeze and 45 qts. of oil. with the aux. coolers.
A complete fluid and filter change cost less than the 450's that were replaced.

Any of the pickup based diesels will kill these things in a timed pulling race. Depending on the ratio in the diff they top out at 70 mph. Fuel economy is pretty comparable too. Visibility is much much better. The one thing they do better at is shielding the trailer from head wind, which is worth some fuel savings in open windy areas.

Have an acquaintance that has a motorcycle race team. He owns and uses a full sized, conventional semi as his transport. He has no CDL because he was able to get the proper paperwork stating that his semi is classified as an RV. Also, he doesn't go across any scales. I am pretty sure he has "Not for Hire" on the truck cab.

Something maybe you or somebody else might look in to when thinking about a rig that size.
