Front loader bucket has some holes in it and might need welding?

3/8 plate is overkill I rebuilt the same sized bucket and used 3/16“ plate. You need to replace your cutting edge while you are at it yours is junk. You can get a good one for cheap on eBay. Take the bucket off and get on some sawhorses where you can roll it over.

I've had the fortune of retooling nos buckets just like that for quick hitch use for a dealer who had a stock of them when the switched over to mostly quick hitch, rather than pin-through. Those buckets are too light as they are. Point being that bucket is rotted through. I've also been back after the user caught a stump and folded the bucket up. Quick hitch held made out of 3/8" and 1/2". The bottom of the bucket did not.

Can I just weld new cutting edge on top of the old / existing one? There will be a ton of grinding to get the existing one off.
