Hooked up my B2782 front mount snow blower to my B3030 for the first time this weekend. After about 200', the chain on the blower breaks. No rocks or sticks that I could see, only about 18" of light snow. I repair it (half hazardly mind you) and 100' later, boom, broken again.

Why are the sheer bolts not breaking first? My dealer is coming out this Friday to have a look, but I thought I'd see if anyone else has experienced this problem. By the way, I've yet to touch the factory sheer pins. We did have alot of snow (see pic) but still, the sheer bolts should have gone first.

You didn't mention where the chain was breaking at. If it's at the master link, ensure that the open end of master link is on the trailing side of the chain travel direction. This may not be the problem but just food for thought.

It did break at the master link. Honestly, I didn't know master links were even directional, so I didn't pay attention to which direction it was installed. Learn something new everyday. I'll make sure to mention this to the dealer when he comes out, thanks for your reply.

I had a Bota Blower on an L 3830 and the shear pin did not shear when I picked up a 2x4 in the auger. Bent it real bad and dealer would not warrenty it. Cost me over 100 bucks to get it somewhat straight. Got rid of it.

Scott, I will follow up next week (Tuesday) when I get home from my farm. I've done some searches regarding similar blowers to ours. One poster claimed the shear bolts installed from the factory were incorrect, and he too broke the chain. His solution was to go down a grade. However, I find it hard to believe Kubota (or who ever manufactures them) would make such a serious mistake by installing a shear bolt that is "too" strong. Most of the posts I read were the opposite, they had to go up a grade to stop them from breaking.

Regarding the installation of proper shear bolts: don't assume the manufacturer got it right. It could very well be that the bolts used were regular bolts not shear bolts.

Make sure the augers and fan will spin freely (well greased too) when the shear bolts are removed. If things are rusted together, then the shear bolt function will be nullified.

thanks Peter, we'll check the shear bolts Friday, just in case they are wrong. I already bought spares. The fan and augers spin freely, and I greased all the fittings.

My question is Why did anything break? If you were only in snow (no lumber, rocks, sticks or animals) then nothing should have given way. Is there a bad tooth on any sprockets that could be stressing the chain?

A qick explanation for my previous advice: If the open end of master link is facing the direction of travel, any small bump(ie.. chain tensioner or other debri ) can dislodge the clip and cause it to disengage from the pin thus causing chain to separate. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif By reversing the clip, any bump only forces the clip onto the pin and shouldn't remove it. An old motorcycle trick from years ago!!
