Thanks, James, your picture looks like my machine but not like my owners manual or service manual. My owners manual only has one page in section 5 (Check points before Operations). I do have a picture but no procedure (Para 6.7, page 49)

which tells you to clean or replace filter but nothing about the "air" position on the pet-cock. The service manual has a picture of a fuel filter on page 2-15 but it does not look like mine nor does it explain anything about the air position on the pet-cock.

Hmmm. That is from a DK35se manual. Do you have the older DK35? The DK35se manual is glossy and has photo's. Yours looks like drawings.

Yes, mine is a 2006 (Canada) DK35 (Gear).

So does your petcock actually have an air setting then?

Yes, it has 3 positions, on/off/air. One line comes from diaphragm pump, one goes to left side of engine and one goes back to tank (which I think is from the air for venting). Mine is also oriented 90 degrees from your picture. I intend to fill bowl, shift pet-cock to air and turn over to see if It will run, (as mentioned by another post) and then switch to on, if it settles down to normal operation. Please advise if this is not correct. It is still raining here so won't be doing this until it stops. Thanks, Bob.

You have it right. The first time I changed my fuel filter, I had the bowl about half full. I put the valve to air and it started right up. It died after about 15-20 seconds. I just cranked it over for about 5 seconds and it was back to running. Let it run on the air setting for a few minutes. All the air will be purged from the filter/fuel bowl mount. Mine is a 2004 CK30hst but I believe the same bowl set-up was used on several models and years.
