Fuel funnels / water trap

Hi guys. I was in the local JD dealership today and saw a fuel funnel with a fine mesh strainer and sedimate area to keep water / trash out of the fuel tank. Looked like a good idea. The problem was that it cost $25. and it was not even green. Anybody know where I can buy one for my tractor and a smaller one for my chain saw at a reasonable price? John, my kubota has one installed in the fuel tank. You can find the filters at a lawnmower/chainsaw shop for the chainsaw. I cannot quote you a price on them in these times. Particularly here in southern california, where everything is doubled and trippled compared to other areas of the country. I would sugguest your tractor dealership for the fuel tank.

John, I'd like to see that funnel. I've seen plenty of them with a fine mesh strainer to catch any trash or debris, but how would it stop or separate out water? And now that you mention it, Scruffy, my B7100 had the built in strainer in the fuel tank, but the B2710 does not. Wonder why the difference.

Bird, the screen on them is of such small mesh, that it can and will stop water molecules from going through it. Fuel is not a problem. It seems as if I remember reading somewhere that it was an extremely small gold wire filament that they were made from, but that was ... huhmmm years ago. I'm sure that would be too costly in these times.
Why give you something for free when they can charge you 25 bucks for what used to be included in the purchase price.

I was wondering the same thing. My B7100 has the fuel strainer in the fuel tank opening but my B2150 does not. I've often wondered if it was missing or was never there (since I bought it used). Based upon your post I now believe that it never had one.

When Coleman stoves that used Coleman fuel, or white gas, were popular you could get this type of funnel. I haven't seen any of them in a while but I haven't been looking for them either. You might try an auto supply store or an automite store that specials in deisels.

Scruffy, I'd heard they worked that way before, but I guess I'm just a little bit skeptical. If I remember right, the one in my B7100 sure appeared to be some kind of plastic material, and it might have stopped small quantities of water, but when I refueled once with diesel that was about 10% water, it sure didn't stop it./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Bird, I agree that the latest ones were of a plastic material. A good quality screen will stop the water from going through, but like anything if hit with enough force, I guess it could be forced through. I am surprised that you didn't get some initial stoppage though to forwarn you.

Scruffy, at the time, I'd already learned that if you poured, or pumped, it in too fast, it would overflow./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif So I was pumping slow and it all went through with no problem. No problem until I tried to start the engine the next day, that is./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif I consider it a valuable learning experience. I learned all I needed to know about draining the tank and lines, changing filters, bleeding injectors, etc./w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

I am sorry to hear that you had such an experience, but I am glad that you gained the knowledge and experience to help us out when some of us suffer like experiences! Fortunately, I have not had it happen to me, and hopefully I won't, but the law of averages says I will get an opportunity sometime in the future. Not looking forward to it.
