Fuel prices starting to get ridiculous

in MA the gas and diesel price delta is about $0.40 per gallon. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It all depends, are you talking premium 92 octane which it seems more and more engine manufactuers seem to recommend. Toyota is one that calls for it in some of their engines. If that is the case, out here, premium and diesel are the same in price even though diesel gets more federal tax on it.

I do not use Super Duper in my Lexus and runs fine. I tried 89 and 93/94 and got nowhere but a higher bill.

Lexus manual states :
Fuel type
Octane Rating
Only UNLEADED
87 (Research Octane Number 91) or higher

Now in my GSXR is a different story. Burns much hotter and higher RPM'S then the Lexus. About 6K more!

Super is 2.35 and diesel is 2.50

Premium and diesel run about $2.79 out here. But I guess when your the second largest consumer of gas on the planet after the USA as a whole, that happens. Our refineries can't even keep up with the demand for California alone. We are currently building ethanol plants here. That should be interesting. Also, Chevron is reported to be buying out Unocal which owns the patent to a low emission fuel process which goes away with the takeover. That should knock a few pennies off the price. Exxon/Mobil is the largest followed by Chevron of California. Exxons sales are about 350 billion a year, Chevron about half that. Most of Californias crude oil comes from California. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

They are going to get a lot more ridiculous. Personally, I don't think we'll ever see 1.50 gas again, but some call me pessimistic by nature /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Here's why:

Reserves have been downgraded by almost if not every major producer in the last few years.

Many producers only found 40-50% (new reserves) of the oil they pumped last year. Not good, and unprecedently low.

China and India want some oil. Since production is not increasing they will get some of "ours".

IMHO, everyone should get used to high oil prices. There are lots of reasons for them to rise, and few reasons for them to fall.

Yep, my Lexus and my Tundra both run just fine on regular, there may be a slight decrease in high end performance, but I don't really drive them like that, so it doesn't matter. My Audi on the other hand, needs the high test for the twin turbo motor. It will run on reg, but there's a decided performance difference, depending on the weather. My Yanmar uses so little diesel I havn't paid any attention to the price vs gas!

From my view inside the industry, you are spot-on Billy. There may be short-term fluctuations, but overall the trend will be UP. It's not "ridiculous", it's just world-wide supply and demand. Buy fuel efficient vehicles and upgrade your home insulation and HVAC systems when it makes economic sense, drive less, adjust your thermostats, and (like Mike) buy the stocks of well-run public oil companies.
