Ford 4500 Industrial
Hello everyone, I hope you guys can help me figure out an issue I am having.
I need to know which fuel pump I need to buy.
(Very long story, Short)
I have a Ford 4500 Industrial Backhoe and I had hired a mobile diesel mechanic to get the tractor started ( I couldn't figure it out, and no longer had the time to work on it ). He tried to scam me out of thousands, and in the end disappeared with the original Fuel pump.
I am pretty sure the issue is the fuel pump, I had narrowed the issue down to that and tried to rebuild it. But I think I ordered the wrong kit ( according to a guy that rebuilds them online ) and probably messed something up also.
But since I do not have the fuel pump, I am not sure which pump I need to order. I have attached some pictures of the engine and the rebuild kit I ordered in the past. One issue with the rebuild kit was that the top cover set up was different than the original so I just used the original cover. I figured it was just a different model and did not affect function.
I was hoping someone could help me figure out which pump I need to order. I have tried looking up the engine numbers to see if I could locate the correct pump, but I have not been able to.
Oh' Ill need to order injectors also, that POS took of with those also. And those got rebuilt also.
Any help would absolutely amazing, I would like to get running before winter.
I appreciate any help.
Thanks.

Can't help with the exact part but you need to ask for an Injector Pump and Injectors not a "fuel pump". You're probably looking at over a grand just for the CAV injector pump. The injectors are maybe $80/each. Then you'll probably need someone to install them. The pump should be retimed since you don't know what the guy did. He may have cranked the engine after pulling the old pump just to be an A-hole. You may need the gear too for the new pump.

You can buy a "cheap" knock-off pump for around $700 but you get what you pay for.

Edit: I see TractorTech got you the part numbers.

Thanks for the replies

If the guy just pulled the pump out, the replacement pump only mates to the gear one way. Bolting the pump to the engine should match a timing mark, but most likely, you can match the flange of the replacement to the paint outline of the old pump.

Thanks for all the help. I was finally able to get it installed.
But' I am unable to get it to start. I made a post about it here:

If you have any ideas, what my issue could be.
Again thanks for help!

Two things on you pictures. First, you blocked the side line from the pump to the filter head, why? Second, and it may not make a difference, is your 'return from the injectors' plumbed into the filter head should go to your tank from the #3 injector and that port on the head plugged. There is not line on this system for the leakoff line to be tied to the injection pump, unless you have a port (can't tell from your picture) on the back side of the injection pump on the top front. It it does have a port there, then that is plumbed to the injector leakoff line on the #1 injector.

If you are cranking the motor over with that much battery and your cables/connections are good and you are using a heat gun to warm the intake air, then you shouldn't need or use ether. If the engine is sound like you say from your compression tests, then you don't need ether. It sounds to me like you may have a timing problem. To start, have you varied the timing on the pump to if it makes a difference? Meaning, loosen the 3 bolts that hold it on the timing cover and move it, I believe clockwise, looking at the back of the cover?

Where did you buy your injectors? The injectors may be set wrong.

Wow, what a nightmare! It sounds like that mechanic really pulled a fast one on you. For the fuel pump, you might want to check the engine model number and look for specific part numbers online. Forums for Ford 4500 owners can be super helpful too. Lots of folks have been through this!
