Fuel Transfer Pump

Yes. The Pocket Pump has no fittings . Just stick it in the hole in the can, pail or whatever. The pump is at the bottom of the shaft so always primed and ready to go.

Excellent!
Thanks Al.
Apparently some Home Hardware stores (not all) have these.
I will see if I can get my local HH get one for me, when I get to my summer cottage in Nova Scotia next week.

Ok so I am looking to upgrade from the standard 5 gallon diesel can. Or possibly modify the can. However my google skills seem to be lacking.

I am looking for a cheap pump to transfer the fuel from the can into the tractor. It does not need to be electric, a hand pump is fine. I'd rather not have it be gravity operated. Looking at what I can find they are all either very expensive powered options or gravity.

I currently have just 1 five gallon can. It is just not enough. I was thinking of either buying a "caddy" that holds 15 gallons or so or getting another couple 5 gallon cans. However with these new EPA approved "improved" cans it takes too dang long to empty them into the tank. I don't like holding them up there that long. So I figure if I am going to upgrade why not go a bit better and just not have to lift the cans at all.

And no I am not going to get a 55 gal drum. I am a hobby farmer and do not use that much fuel to make that a solid idea.

Any one got a good tool for this job?

Harbor Freight carries the Battery Operated Liquid Transfer Pump for $9 before discount. Seems identical to the "pocket pump", I've used one to fill/empty my 50 gallon transfer tanks. (pocket pump seems like what you do when you play pocket pool :) )

But I usually use 5 Gallon cans and just lift them on to the hood and use a LONG CLEAR plastic tube to siphon. (long clear prevents diesel mouth wash)

I bought a Flo n' Go Duramax Gas Caddy and plan on putting it in the FEL to lift it for gravity drain.

/edit - I suppose I could use the FEL to lift a 5 gallon can.

/edit 2 - here's the FEL Facilitated Fueling (FFF)

If you have any kind of usage, the hand pump gets tiring pumping from a 55 gallon drum. So...... I bought the cheapest 12v pump from TSC many years ago and it does the trick. I have an old dedicated trailer with 3ea. 55 gallon drums and this pump with battery. When the tanks get empty I hook to my pu and go to town and fill up. 3 at 50 gal of diesel (leave space for expansion) puts you under the DOT Has Mat Plackard posting requirement.

I don稚 go through enough fuel to warrant a 55 gal drum. A couple 5 gal cans is sufficient.

One of the things I dislike about my tractor is the fuel fill is in the center of the hood cowel. With these epa mandated fuel cans it is just a pain in the ***.

I go through 5 gallons or less a week in the mowing season. Less in winter.

So a $10 pump is All I need. Frankly I though they would be way more.

Let us know how that little HF pump works for you. I picked one up a few weeks ago out of curiosity, but haven't tried it yet for anything.

Since your fill port is on the hood, I'm wondering if it will have enough head to pump that high from a can on the ground. :scratchchin:

This is what I use. Battery Powered Diesel Pump

Got mine a little cheaper off ebay. It has worked out great for me. I store fuel in two 55 gallon drums.

I値l report back. No time to get out there today. If not enough head I suppose I can throw the can in the FEL and lift it.
Lower back pain is no joke. There are days lifting 5 pounds is a no go. Thankfully with exercise those are getting fewer.

FWIW, I purchased one of these pumps from Harbor Freight five or six years ago and it gets lots of use filling up the tractor and side-by-side. I extended the feed line with a smaller diameter hose that has an easier time getting down the filler neck of my truck's fuel tank. I also extended the battery leads so that the pump can sit right at the filler door on the truck while the leads reach up to the battery under the hood. Yeah, I'm paying a little more for taxed Diesel, but I don't use that much and I don't ever have to hassle with lifting cans and such.
