I wouldn't want to scare the poor little darlings.

I want them dead and gone! Else they may come back.

I was losing chickens, ducks and guineas to racoons and coyotes, so when we built our coop, we used a cyclone fence done kennel, and they wrapped it in half inch wire mesh. Then we dug a trench around the bottom and filled it with concrete. Zero losses since doing this.

As for shooting problems animals, I keep a 357 revolver handy for this. I also have a 44 revolver for hogs at night that is very effective, but I prefer the 357 for smaller animals. I think a revolver is safer around a house without kids then a semi auto. I have a few of those too, but they are not my go to weapon, the revolver is. I also carry it on my tractor and lawn mower when I'm using them. Most of the time I put snake shot in it and will have hollow point rounds close by just in case. I've never had a coyote stand still long enough to change ammo, but I have had hogs completely ignore me on the tractor and allow me to drive up within 20 to 30 feet of them for an easy head shot. Why they have no fear of the tractor and bush hog going is beyond me, but for whatever reason, it's happened multiple times.

Not if you use tannerite! ☺

I gave up shooting at coyotes many year ago. They are exactly like a pepperoni stick wrapped in a huge fur coat. Like Eddie said - anything within a reasonable range is moving like a bolt of lightning and the shots I do get are at least 250 yards across my little lake. I clipped more hair on coyotes than I care to think about.

Out at 250 yards and beyond - I think my 'ol 30-30 starts skipping across the ground like a flat rock thrown out on a pond.

Humans are the most destructive rodents on the planet! That's OK. Probably the same fate as the raccoons will soon befall them.

You can do that to deer to. I have worked a snorting tractor so close I could almost touch one.

My Grandfather's shotgun, a Remington 11-48, hangs on the wall on my side of the bed with 4 in the mag and the chamber empty.

Exactly. The gun has an unloaded chamber is perfectly safe, yet can be put into operation in a fraction of a second. Even in the dark, even when half asleep.

Neighbor's dog killed 25 of my chickens a couple at a time - he's a bird dog never trained not to, and chicken is tasty! Coons grabbed a lot of my chickens too, along with possums and hawks and eagles. That stopped abruptly when I adopted my brother's German Shepherd Dog. He was around 2 years old then and isn't neutered. Nothing moves on, or over (my brother taught him to look up as a habit) my property without Willy knowing about it... and if it's edible, he eats it :licking: ... and if it gives chase he'll chase it to the property line :cool2: . I have an old rooster who's gonna die of old age as long as Willy's around. For me a German Shepherd is a perfect solution - and he's non-toxic and totally organic!

You also have plenty of time to get your weapon readied since any strange vehicle gets barked at.

Nice looking Shepherd. How did you train it not to kill your chickens? I have Akita's and they kill everything that gets into their yard. Snakes, racoons, rabbits and of course, my chickens.
