Zombie thread, but another year. Today I put the young chicks outside for the first time... Just now I went out to check the pork chops on the grill and saw a fox on the edge of the treeline, downwind of the birds and house. I set my beer down to go inside and grab a gun and-

The electric fence will serve better guard duty anyways, I just don't like to have it on during daylight hours because of my dog.

I run my E-fence with a dusk/dawn timer;off during the day.

I simply do not understand your situation there - Jstpssng. Do you have young children in your house. Now I have a bevy of guns strategically located around the house for defense and for the rare varmint. Every single one is fully loaded - all the time. When I grab a tool - it had darn well better be ready to operate at that exact moment.

You are right. When growing up Dad kept every gun loaded and always taught us that it is the "unloaded gun that kills". It's loaded and so handle it accordingly. Every gun I have is loaded at all times, even the ones locked in the safe.

1 - Most of my guns locked up for "storage" do not have a round in the chamber.
2 - I'm not worried about my kids in my house with my guns, I'm worried about other kids in the house with my guns (or in my vehicle). Every gun I own is either locked in some fashion or on my person (and yes, both my boys were taught that a gun is assumed to be loaded and handled as such).

The reality is there are a lot of stupid people out there... All you need to do is search the web. The sad reality is many of these accidents could of been prevented if the parents had an ounce of prevention (securing the weapon).

You can't fix stupid...That's why we feel safer with a lot of laws.

I have a larger fire rated gun safe, but also have a V-Line long gun closet safe. V-Line Closet Safe I keep a loaded Ruger 10/22, handgun and shotgun in it. It doesn't provide the level of security of the larger safes, nor is it intended to. But it provides a level of security from little hands, while still allowing quick access.

I had to dispatch a bobcat and a coyote over the past few months when they were in our chicken coop.

I am not always around to deal with predators, so will have to take other preventive measures... I just haven’t had time to put the fence up for the summer. As in this instance I generally see foxes in the daytime; most likely because nighttime is when coyotes are out and would love to have her for dinner. She most likely has a den with pups nearby.
