"Ice House" In this part of Texas a convience store is called an "Ice House". I've noticed that for some reason this seems to amuse visitors to this area.
When I was in the Army I worked with an old sargeant, who was often asked how long he had been in. He had two standard replies. One was " I've been in so long I was DRO at the last supper." (DRO is dining room orderly, a task assigned to KP's back when they had them.)
The other, "I've been in so long I was road guard for Mosses when he crossed the Red Sea."(when a unit on the march approaches an intersection, soldiers are sent ahead to stop cross traffic. They are called road guards.)
Finally, from the TexMex in this area there is an expression that I get a kick out of. It refers to a conspiracy, mainly when corruption is involved " Se tampon con el mismo fresada"
Translation "They cover themselves with the same blanket"

Hey DaveNH,
Whenever somebody around here says, "He's not the sharpest tool in the shed." Somebody else seems to chime in, "Nor the brightest."

Here's an expression I learned from my wife, I'm sure Pete's heard it. It actually comes in three parts, you can use part 1, 1and2, or 1,2,and3, depending on how cold it is, but usually one person starts it, and someone else finishes it. I guess it's how we commisserate over how cold our sorry buts are mid winter./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

It's colder than a witches tit.

Wearing a cast iron bra.

Doing push-ups in the snow.

You warm climate types must have a few choice expressions for the hot weather.?? Let me know and maybe I'll try one out if we get any "smoking"/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif 80° days this summer./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Speaking of cold, I was on a nuke sub that surfaced near the North Pole. Bitterly cold up there. Dry cold. Not sure who first figured it out, but if you peed off the sail it froze before hitting the hull with a light tinkle sound. Gave new meaning to the phrase, "I've gotta tinkle."

To express cold weather:

"Colder than a welldigger's toe."

And for someone who is doing something that is not very bright:

"He appears to be suffering from a rectal-cranial inversion."

Doesn't have both oars in the water.

Driveway doesn't go all the way to the street.

A dime shy of making change.

I've heard dozens of those types of expressions. Here are a few:

A couple sandwiches short of a picnic.

Lights are on, but nobody's home.

Elevator doesn't go to the top floor.

Shaking his head sounds like a mustard seed in a railcar.

If his IQ were 3 points higher, he'd be classified as a geranium.

A few buckets short of a load.
