"Ice House" In this part of Texas a convience store is called an "Ice House". I've noticed that for some reason this seems to amuse visitors to this area.
When I was in the Army I worked with an old sargeant, who was often asked how long he had been in. He had two standard replies. One was " I've been in so long I was DRO at the last supper." (DRO is dining room orderly, a task assigned to KP's back when they had them.)
The other, "I've been in so long I was road guard for Mosses when he crossed the Red Sea."(when a unit on the march approaches an intersection, soldiers are sent ahead to stop cross traffic. They are called road guards.)
Finally, from the TexMex in this area there is an expression that I get a kick out of. It refers to a conspiracy, mainly when corruption is involved " Se tampon con el mismo fresada"
Translation "They cover themselves with the same blanket"

"Thermopylae had its messenger of defeat; the Alamo has none." - graffito found on a wall of the Alamo, 1836
