For the big rocks I pulled out, the auger wouldn't be able to surface them -- they're just too tall (seriously 8" or more). The spacing of the spiral on the auger wasn't big enough to just be able to move them.

There have been times when I've thought I might as well have dug the hole with a rock bar.

Got the last of the posts set today. Whoever was responsible for marking and digging the holes needs to be fired -- positioning went wrong in a number of places and had to modify holes to get the posts spaced properly.

On the upside, the gate is now 36" instead of 32", which will make the missus happy.

Really don't know where my calculations went wrong...oh well, it'll work!

You should probably fire the contractor. 🤣

Not "his" fault. The rocks in Tennessee soil will bounce an auger off direction no matter how carefully he set it.

No, it's definitely my fault...somehow. Not sure where my measurements went wrong, but with a 12" auger for 4x4s I should have had plenty of leeway.

Anyway, on to the next phase!

Status update...at this point I have the top and bottom rails in for the livestock panels and am starting the 'trellis' at the top. Been focused on getting the bracing in place for the posts to ward off any bowing/cupping/warping.

I had orginally intended for an 18" gap between the top rail and the bottom of the 'trellis', but due to the slope of the land I've shortened that to avoid building too high up on the posts on the backside. Turns out there's a 17" drop from the high point to the low point of the fence. The joys of terraced land.

Overall I've been happy with the pocket screw approach for the rails, though certainly slower than just using a framing nailer. Measuring and cutting is probably the long pole, as well as walking back and forth from the garage apron (where I have the saws setup and lumber stacked) to the garden site. Definitely getting my steps in!

More progress - Finished the 'trellis rail' all around the top and have half of the livestock panels in.

Man I severely underestimated the amount of effort invovled in this thing. Good that I'm retired, but I'm ready to be done with this and move on to the next project, to be sure.
