Egon , this garden was a joint project I used to do with my 2 brothers. I also have 2 sisters that shared in the bounty also...so make that 5 families that it fed. The peppers however were grown more or less as a hobby and sold to help cover the other costs. Now I do a much smaller garden for just my family ...but still have that urge to plant a lot of stuff.

Glenn, that's why you grow the kids...so they can pull all the weeds. Those pictures were taken after a spell of dry weather that allowed us to really clean the garden. We use troy built tillers, and till first, then use a one row cultivator to throw loose dirt up around plants to cover small weeds. (we plant rows wide enough to get the tractor thru ). But in the end, nothing beats just pulling the remaining weeds by hand.... and most people don't want to spend the time. Also, when the plants get big...then nothing works but your hands. On a smaller garden, you can mulch to keep weeds down...but that is not practical on a 2 acre garden. It was always fun to watch people drive by and gawk at the stuff.

I am having the same problem as you this year, as we are getting rain every 2-3 days, and my weed crop is taking over. Maybe I will post a picture of this yr's weed crop tomorrow.

Pete:

I also get that urge to plant but surely do not have the success you have had. Maybe it's my BROWN thumb. Anyway I keep trying. Maybe some day.

This spring has been very discouraging.

Egon

Ok, so here is a picture I just shot of a portion of my current garden. You will see no dirt here. 2 wks ago this was completely clean...now weeds everywhere ...probably 10 inches tall. With rain expected again tomorrow, this is the make or break point....either mow them with a lawn mower or pull....probably to wet to till.

Pulling them may be best, but I'd probably tackle them with a hoe.

Bird, you are probably right...sharpen it to a good edge , then go after it. I'm a little overwhelmed by the sheer volume ... if I can just get one pass with a tiller...then not so many to deal with....
