I'm looking for a used garden tractor for tilling, scraping, and trenching on my 1 acre in Arizona. Where to find used machines at reasonable price? Read good review on JD 318. Thanks for input and advice.

craigslist??

I've looked on Craigslist locally, and found a JD 316 with dozer blade for $3000. But read about probs with 316 and esp 317. Also a Simplicity 9020 for $4000. How about other brands and specific models?

JD400 series: 400, 420, 425,445,455. A couple are diesel and will give you longer life. Can be had with 3ph and rear pto. all have hydraulics. Best garden tractors ever made.

Also JD4110 or 2305

Kubota bx series

Simplicity.

Ford 1200

Gravely professional series.

Yes, mjncad, I already noticed most used tractors were in middle America. Already looked on tractorhouse; not much at my low end price point. Will look on other sites you provided. Thanks and

There is a 420 with an Onan engine for sale locally. it has a belly mower, 3 pt, rear PTO, 3 hydraulic hook-ups for attachemnts. The pictures look like it is clean, but I don't know the hours on the engine. He's asking $2200 firm

Are the Onan engines reliable? How many hours are they good for if maintained? I understand they are costly to repair.
Any other problems?

If it's in good shape. That's a good price. That tractor will run forever if you keep the fluids changed.

Thanks for your reply. How much would a used rototiller attachment cost? I saw a 4110 with loader and rototiller, but no response from seller.

The 4110 is a subcut -a size up from a GT.

Used tillers that will fit the 420 are not very common. They're out there, but few and far between from what I've seen. It would have to be a CAT0, 36 - 48". A new one can probably be bought, but not cheap.

Though not as nimble a mower, the 4110 would make a better tilling machine. But it's going to cost you a lot more $$$.

Had a 318 for more than 15 yrs. Bought it used, 1-2 yrs old. Prior to buying I called Onan as asked about the engine life. In the tractor, expected life was 2000 hrs. When the tractor walked away, it was pushing 2k hrs and was noticeably using oil.

Several hundred hrs before parting, the Gov failed. On these engines it is part of the camshaft gear. Did all the labor myself and spent $175 on parts which included one cam bearing. Local JD shop mech had never seen a Onan torn down to the point I had to disassemble for this repair.

Engine has been out of production for at least 5 yrs.,

Thanks Gittyup. The 4110 is beyond my price range, unless I find a steal deal. What about a 318? Same story with tilling?

George

Might suggest you consider 2 tractors. One for tilling and one for mowing. Look for a good used japanese CUT that will pull a CAT1 tiller, and then get the 420 for mowing. A descent gray market japper can be had for about $1500 or so.

Might also look at what a cat0 tiller costs new from TSC or ebay. Just make sure the 420 already has a rear pto and 3ph arms. You don't want to know what they'd cost you from JD.

I'd also consider the other brands that are out there. Some older Kubotas, Simplicities, Fords, and so on.

The high cost of the 4110 is because it is just too new (and green).

I would run from anything with an Onan engine .
They went out of business years ago resulting in very hard to find real expensive parts .

Thanks for more helpful info. Will check out CUT and CAT1 tiller. My secondary application is more grading.

Best regards,

George
