On my 1700 it is bolted to the forward holes and the gas cap hole lines up properly.

My 2000 is bolted like that also .I have a original tank and is still aligned pretty good:D

That's exactly what I'm saying , it has to be in the forward holes to line up correctly.

Hmmm! I looked at mine today and it is in the front holes, the rear holes are still exposed as in the picture you posted, so the mystery still has not been solved  do you think there are other holes behind the bumper frame along side of each of the holes that bolts are in now? or perhaps only these set of holes exist and may be for something else?

Sorry that didn't help, good luck finding a solution.

DND it looks like I have the identical tank you do. I can see the BLK on yours also. My tractor was not a referb either I'm betting it's just the 30+ Yr. Old Tank That has disfigured some over the yrs.All the refurbs I've seen has new White tanks on them. It also seems my hood mounts the same as yours with no adjustment and no dents or bends so I ruled that out.Went through this also when I bought it and came to the conclusion of I can get the cap off not having to raise the hood and it doesn't rub without any leaks NO Harm No foul.;)

Carey i remembered this when i was looking around at pics of yanmars. I found this pic from a site about importing from Japan it has a pic of a yanmar and has the clear plastic tank. This is in the first pic.

EDIT: for some reason my first pic did not load. Im looking into it.

The second pic is of the founder of Viena (VN) tractors in Dallas Tx. Who is oviously a vn reconditioner. I think them and LCI are the two big ones.

Well i could not figure it out and when i went back to the site the tractor must be sold i got the pic of, as it did not show up. Im going to try and post a pic of another tractor from their site to show the original japanse shape of their tractors. You can see the tank but i have no idea if that is a dirty clear tank or a faded black tank, a dirty black tank or so on.

Here is another. I cant really tell in this pic either. But i am 100% positive that the other pic i saw of a ym2000 they had, was a clear tank. It had an opened hood and a good side view of it. NOw maybe it was replaced by a farmer at some point with an aftermarket clear/white seethrough tank , i dont know. I think i saved the webpage or something instead of the pic when i right clicke several months ago.

My point is that i dont know if gas tank color is a way to spot a refurb.
