Gas engine life

I know this is a difficult question with many variables. Not including the mower itself can someone tell me average hours (life) of a gas engine considering it in the perfect world and that its maintained properly. Just please try and give me a ball park figure...1000, 2000 hrs ?
Im trying to consider the differences between gas and diesel before I make a purchase.

Hi! Very VARIABLE. On small Gaz engines with NO STEEL LINER cylinder. May be 500-1000 hrs. New Gaz engines with cast or steel liner 1000-2000 hrs. Diesel engines with REMOVABLE CYLINDER SLEEVES ( White iron casting) are very more DURABLE. Diesel fuel lubricate cylinder. Diesel engine are more heavy and more tough built. 3000-6000 hrs.

Depends on the engine; briggs, Kohler, and others all make different engines with differ life length. A Kohler Command is "expected" to outlast a Kohler Courage engine.

Thanks for all the help. Thats exactly the answers I was looking for. I think I can find a good (like new) mower or new one that should last me somewhere between 8 to 10 years. I figure by then they will have come up with several new improvements.

I had 12 years, and something over 1400 hours on my Briggs engine when I traded my Landlord in. That was a 12.5 hp without a filter, or pressurized lubrication. I was pretty religous about taking care of the engine though. The engine was still not using oil when I traded it.
