I've heard about that and wondered if everything else is organized there. Can you sack your own groceries or are they organized too? /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Another disadvantage in my view. The last thing I want is some gas jockey dinging up the paint on my vehicles. Unlike some people, I remember the 'good old days' when all stations were full service. Some of those days -- and station attendants -- weren't so good. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Another reason is probably in the event of a spill or the auto fill malfunctions it limits the extend of the spill. I know that 50.00 is still alot of gas on the ground but its better than 200.00 worth. When i was younger i used to work for an environmental company and we were on a gas spill where the transport driver over filled an underground storage tank at a gas station at 3 in the morning the estimate was around 1500 gallons they evacuted the whole town because it went down the storm drains into the municipal sewer system. BIG $$$$$
So that may also effect the limit setting just a guess though /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Cheap gas and they pump it, only problem is when you have 10 pumps and one guy pumping, it takes some time. Sometimes they will even wash your windows and if you ask check the oil too. Ahh life is good at the gas pump. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Now if we can lower the real estate taxes, do away with income tax, sales tax, and other user fees, it might be a nice place to live. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

We don't have the luxury of having someone pump our fuel in NY. NJ has a law that won't let you pump your own fuel. I think maybe the fuel station owners in NY are too cheap to hire someone or they just don't want to come out of the warm store in the winter. Maybe in NJ its an insurance liability thing. I don't know for sure. On my last trip to NJ I thought the attendant was going to have a heart attack when I got out of my truck and started fueling up. He came running over telling me I couldn't fuel up and that he had to do it. I don't know when that started in NJ but I grew up there and back in the 70's worked at a few stations and pumped a lot of gas. I always thought that was just part of the friendly service to pump gas, check oil, tire pressure etc. I remember the odd and even plate days, 5 gallon limits and long lines at the pumps. (oops, guess I'm showing my age) Fotunately I pumped gas during the 70's gas crunch so I always had a full tank.

Here in PA (southeast) my local station is sunoco. No limit on credit cards, but a $50 limit on DEBIT cards. Haven't encountered it at any other station but the sunoco brand.

I recently had a different take on that. Stopped at 10pm to get fuel and the clerk refused to take my 2 $100.00 bills. because they aren't allowed to keep more than $50.00 in the cash drawer /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Said I had to use credit/debit. Left and ended up taking the long way home to get fuel. Between truck, tractor and can it took $148.14
when I called the first place, apologies were offered and they even sent me coupons n the mail. One for a free hot dog and one for a cup of coffee. The kicker, they had already expired !

Oregon is a full service station state. We were there a few years ago on a trip with the Harleys. Every time we filled up, the attendants were meticulous. They wiped the nozzle before they moved towards the tank, gently put it in the filler, and then wiped as they pulled it out.

We have pretty plain jane Hogs, not the super show bikes. Still, they were very careful. I was impressed.

Still????

Everyone I knew in Oregon absolutely hated the no self service rules.

When I lived there in the '80s, there was a referendum to permit self service stations (actually to block the state from banning them). The state fire marshall was mortified, declaring self service gas stations fire hazards and menaces to public safety. It was all hot air, and was nothing more than the fire marshall trying to protect his own turf.

The fire marshall's safety arguments were bogus, of course. The nearest station to my house had a ten year old 'employee,' the owner's son. Since he was 'employed' there, it was legal for him to pump gas, never mind his age.

I didn't know a single person who claimed to have voted against the bill, Everyone I worked with couldn't wait to vote for it. We all wanted self service, along with the lower prices we expected, yet it failed. That is one election I have always been suspicious of.

Found the same situation here in southern Va filling up the Chevy 2500 during the dark days of 3+. Adding a note on video monitoring, it cost about 3,500 to 5,000 depending on the setup before installation cost. So what it that for the operator? 100 drive offs. Much easier to limit the spending. We do have probably only one of the few remaining full service stations in the area or maybe VA. price is about 15 cents more a gallon. So for the truck I am looking at about $4.50 extra per fill up. I will check my own oil for that!
