Okay, this is my latest project. It's a gated entrance that will be complete with electric gate, dual keypads, intercom system, video camera feed, exit detector, remote openers, pipe railing, rock walls, concrete drive, lights, landscaping and sprinkler system. I think that about covers it.

The project is about half way done at this point. When the house was being built, I had the rock crew do the walls and pour the entrance driveway. The rock wall designs and overall layout is my design. It's pretty simple, but nice. I'm doing all the steel work and welding as well as the elctronics and wiring. The gate in the pictures is a temporary one. There will be a custom made gate to finish it out. I'll post more pictures over the coming weeks.

When I built my new shop, I had an I-beam engineered into the structure so I could have an overhead trolley in my welding room. Most of the pipe and some of the sections were pre-fabed in the shop. Here is some of the metal fab detail.

The gate is almost complete. I'm waiting on the center piece which I've custom ordered from another metal shop. I had the top arch rolled at a nearby gate shop. The gate is 2 3/8 schedule 35 pipe and the verticals are 1 1/4 EMT tubing.

If my welding improves, maybe Harv will hire me.

Very nice Gary! I am going to do an entrance at my place, not nearly as elaborate as yours however. Mine will be more of a rustic look using cedar logs cut off my place. Couple of questions; how high is it from ground level to the cross member on top? Do you recommend attaching the cross member to the two vertical poles prior to or after putting them in the ground. I have a mid size tractor and FEL with bucket. My initial thought is to attach the cross member before erection, but not sure if that is the best plan. Any and all suggestions are welcomed and appreciated.

Nice Gate and Entrance . What type finish are you going to use? I am thinking of a similar gate using 2" square tubing and thought about looking into power coating?? Anyone have any ideas??

As for attaching the top "headache" brace before or after, I've done it both ways. If you have the ability to install it after the posts go up, that's the way to go. If not, you can pull it up using a truck, some chains, and carefull planning. Just remember to use a chain that's longer than the posts are high!

The top brace is 14' from the ground to the bottom of the pipe, so 14' of clearance. Maximum legal height for trucks is 13'6". This way, I can still get big trucks through.

I've already sandblasted and painted about half of it. I'm using Dupont's Emron series with an epoxy primer. It's a lot of money for paint, but it should last. Powder coating is out of the question for everything except the gate because it's all welded together in the field.

Very Nice looking job Gary.

Have you had that grapple off your tractor yet? :D
