I was just following what is on the starting instructions on the tractor. I will try it with a closed throttle or just slightly open next.

WHAT??? I hope you said that wrong.

You start it with a closed throttle in warm weather, and a partially opened throttle in cold weather. Never start it at full throttle.

I would next make sure the strip going along the glow plugs is getting power, when you turn the key backwards.

I own one. And, I have never seen those instructions on it.

You will probably need to open the throttle some if it's cold. Maybe try 10-20%. It's hard to say, each one is a little different, and conditions vary.

If you don't have the owners manual, you should get one asap.

You need to be aware of lots of things, like the required warm up times for the transmission oil in cold weather.

I can take a picture of the sticker if you'd like. Anyway, I'm pretty familiar with motorized vehicles. I own a 3 ATVs a 2 stroke dirt bike and a diesel truck. So I'm very careful when it comes to warmup and engine operation. I checked the strip by the glow plugs and when I turn the key to the left for the glow plugs I get power to the strip.

black smoke = unburned fuel.
I'd would check to see if the engine can rotate freely.- too much fuel is a bad thing.
I'd check gelling in your fuel and get the tractor warmed up in a garage with heater if you can and add battery charger. change your fuel filter . I am not sure if you have 2 of them - mine does and your GC is a cousin to my BX kubota. add 911 . try again.

No one I know of, and there are more than few of us here, has found it necessary to open the throttle more than a little bit, to start their GC.

It sounds like you have fuel, (black smoke), and heat. ????

You could try a shot of WD-40 in the intake, to see if it fires on that. If it does, it's still a fuel problem.

You could also pull one of the glow plugs to see if it is all carbon'd up? (Unlikely).

Providing the fuel isn't gelled from the cold I think the next step would be to pull the glow plugs and check them with an ohm meter to see if they are open or shorted. If either open or shorted they won't work. If it is a 2003 they could be bad. I also agree with others that throttle should be down or just above idle to start. Never known a tractor that requires 3/4 - full throttle to start it.

I'm thinking it might be the glow plugs too. The temps here today are in the lower 40s, I shouldn't have any problems with the diesel gelling in these temps. I'm still unpacking and haven't found my WD 40 to try that. It will probably take me a month to find my multi-meter. I might be better off just buying another one :). I'm going to pull the glow plugs as Ray suggested and see what they look like.

We have not seen any glow plug problems on GC's in this forum.

So, I would bet against that being the problem.
