Thanks for the help. I replaced the ignition switch, and the tractor now starts and runs. :)

However this led me to discover another problem with the tractor. :-(

However the problem isn't related to the electrical system so I'm starting a new thread.

I just jumpered the seat safety switch, and the problem isn't a bad seat safety switch.

If I turn the key to the "start" position, nothing happens. There are no 'funny' noises.

If I turn the key to the "on" position, a funny buzzing noise sometimes comes from what I think is the "safety relay" or the "starter relay". The text in the service manual says "safety relay" but the wiring diagram says "starter relay". Sometimes when I put the key to the "on" position, the lights on the dash flash and all the relays start tripping on/off/on/off/on/off until I turn the key off.

What I think is the safety/starter relay says "CATa-12V-N-S" "can't read it" "51026" on it.

I'm thinking it is time to replace the safety/starter relay. Anyone else have any thoughts?

Glad you got it fixed-btw-the buzzing noise when the switch is turned on is normal-its the fuel pump engaging.

Hi everyone. I'm new here and have seen a lot of good advice already. I'm looking to see if anyone would know what the starter draw should be for my GC2300. It's pulling about 270amps right now. Crnks slow and won't start without a jump. New battery already installed.

I'm familar with that noise. The buzzing that I was referring to came from the electrical arcing inside the broken ignition switch that I replaced. Thankfully small tractors like this don't have a computer on them, like cars do.

Hi Fred, the ground strap is on the left side right behind the radiator. It bolts upto the engine block below the freeze plugs, and then to the frame behind the body pannel. It's about 17mm wide and 2mm thick. Held on with 10mm bolts with 14mm hex heads on them. Hope this helps you out.

Here's the ground strap, just beneath the grille-type material on the front right side.

I can attest to the fact that even a partially broken strap --several of the strands-- will slow down the starter noticeably. After I replaced mine (which finally did break), the tractor started like it did when it was new; it had been a bit slow. There were a few model years where that strap was just a bit too short on the 2300/2310s, and the normal vibration would eventually take it out.

Oops...:ashamed: that picture is of the extra ground strap I added! The original is on the left side, as was noted above.

I put the extra one on just for insurance; the day mine finally broke and the tractor wouldn't start was (of course!) in the middle of a heavy snowstorm when I really needed it- don't want to go through that again!

Thank you irvingj, I'm going to add the second strap to mine as you did. I have the starter out at a rebuild shop and the bench tested it. It was pulling 25amps with no load on it which they said was too high. I'll pick it back up today and reinstall it and post the results.

If your starter is/was indeed bad, it's the first one I know of.

Hey, it's been 4 months since I been on, seems like there is something else going on with my 06 2300. Now even with a jump the tractor still cranks real slow and almost seems like the engine is locking up. Has anyone ever heard of one of these having fuel just dumping into the cylinders? When it is cranking slow, there is puffs of white smoke coming out the exhaust.

Thanks Brian
