GC2600 tachometer/squealing noise

Glad the tach's on my Kubota's are electrically actuated and no cable but if they were, I'd pull the inner drive cable from the outer sheath and apply some lightweight grease to the inner and reinstall it. Squealing usually indicative of a dry inner cable rubbing on the outer sheath and getting ready to break.

Usually not on older GC series....
you can put a stethoscope on it from timing cover output all along cable and noise hits you on bottom side of tach where housing meets tach, thats where the "slip" clutch is.
sometimes removing housing and using light shop air into backside of tach helps.

BUT...you raise a very good point. make sure cable is good, any wear spots on insulator can mean cable itself is speeding up and down. always check the cable itself first, its a cheap (iirc 35$) fix that takes 40 minutes max.

I disconnect the cable when it happens. I've installed a zip tie to keep from losing the nut and also installed cardboard in the hood. Forgot to remove it until the motor got too warm. Just another example of Massey being too cheap to fix a poor design like the brackets that hold the steering cylinder.

Yeah, it’s not the cable. I unhooked it and it turns smoothly. I even put tension on it, with the engine running, and the cable is silent.

Supposedly, the updated part has thinner oil in the viscous coupler that doesn’t cause the squealing when cold.

do you disconnect dash side or engine side? been considering it but been lucky enough after 20 minutes of run time shut down restart works for me with cardboard and cleaning start of every cold season.

so the new housing ITSELF is the viscous coupler? I thought that happened inside tach itself, and housing was just a gear driven 90deg change, if so thats a 100$ fix for me and I may have been wrong all along.

I disconnect at the dash, I haven't even bothered to find the other end of the cable. I don't worry about the hour meter. Since I quit clearing the paved path to the lake I don't thonk I put more than a dozen hourts on it each winter.

thanks, always wondered if doing so would cause cable to spike outwards from sheath.
I do put hours on unit separate of actual work, just going to get mail (with hydro warm up) is 20 minutes. do that pretty much daily as it warms hydro unit up.
maybe I will disconnect today and if I ever sell it just add a few hours to buyer, hell when it jumps around it tends to add approx 30 minutes per hour anyway.
in Jan 2021 I watched it jump for an hour and timed it against actual hour meter. ran for 1 hour added 90 minutes to hour meter. I figured whatever just means I change fluids more often.

Not exactly sure, that’s what I’m trying to find out. From what I’ve read, the part was updated for the fix. But I don’t know exactly what part or number that is.

When looking at the instrument panel parts diagram, the only parts available related to the tach drive are that housing, a plastic gear, and a couple of washers. Or the whole cluster. The gear is just a regular gear, nothing fancy, so it’s probably not that.
