GCWR question on Dodge 2500

I heard a lot about people having transmission problems with mid 90 series Dodge trucks and seemed at the time I always being approached by another Dodge truck owner asking about the trans in mine

I finally lost my reverse too but not until almost 200,000 mi

Three Dodge over the past 25 years all bought used with none less than 60,000. My first was 79. Around here body rot always gets them in the end.

Got a Durango now with factory towing pkg ;)

Most of the problems I have heard of were with the forward gears, IIRC mostly overdrive. My reverse problem -well the second one anyway- was a cracked servo that allowed the reverse band to slip and quickly trashed the band and drum. The trans guy told me that the biggest problem was with the utility trucks that would do a lot of idling. From the factory the TC wouldn't be charged and would would wear out [either the seal or bearing- I can't remember]. There was a fix for them and he performed that for mine even though it wasn't the problem I was having. Other than that he said they were pretty good transmissions, he even had one at the time.

Are the transmission problems you speak of automatics? Sure, I have hear that buzz. No so much on the manual NV4500HD/Cummins unless someone really turns up the juice.

Minre was. This is why you see so many Dodge trucks with manuals.

I have not owned a manual anthing since 1986 and probably never will again. Just does not mesh with my kind of work.

Personally, I don't think ANY truck had a good auto in the mid 90's. They're all light years ahead today.

I find it funny though that Dodge trucks haven't had widespread transmission problems since the mid 90's yet some faithful to other brands can't see the past 11 years of a good proven transmission all while looking past their own favorites long run of recent failures...

Dodges are always rated low for some reason. It will carry more then that but the rating is what it is. That 3.54 gear is a big part of the problem. I think the 13,600# rating is for a properly equipped truck, ie diesel dually.

My 06 F350 SRW diesel is rated at 11,500# GVWR and its GCWR is
25,000#

How is your truck configured? (SRW, 4.10, etc.)?

Which one? All my HD trucks have been SRW except for one I did not own but drove for work from 97 to 99. It was a 96 or 97 GMC dually 4x4 454. I will never own another dually.

The truck I have now is a 06 F350 4x4 SRW PowerStroke 3.73 gears and a 08 Nissan Titan 4x4 4.10 gears with a 2" lift, Dana 44 axles front and rear, and Detroit Lockers.

The ford shows a gcwr of 23,000, not 25,000.

I know a guy that has a 2001 2500 with a Cummins, it goes through a trans every 50k or so. He is afraid to tow with it now.
