I have a very old, no-name Post Hole Digger with a leaking gear box. Are there firms that repair these type of things? -- or am I on my own. It wouldn't kill me to get a new PHD, but I use it infrequently and would prefer not to. Should I just let it leak and give it some grease before each use?

How about putting some Corn Head grease in it? Many gearboxes that have bad seals have that type grease installed in them

If you want to stay with oil then pull it apart and go to a bearing store. They will have seals and speedi sleeves. A speedi sleeve is a very thin metal sleeve that covers the worn part of the shaft where the old seal was rubbing against.

Thanks for the suggestions. The thing is so old and rusted, I'm not even sure I can get it taken apart.

I bet you'll be surprised how easy it comes apart. The threaded portion of the bolts most likely aren't exposed to the elements so they will be in real good shape.
