gearbox ratios

i know gear boxes have different gearbox ratios. (a finishing mower verses a rotary cutter) but why the difference? can you put a 40 hp gearbx from a finishing mower(1:1.92 ratio) on a rotary cutter that runs with a 1:1.47 gear ratio. what difference will it make. how do you tell which is the stronger of the two.apparentle the 1:1.47 gearbox would be since its on the rotary cutter, but whats the difference in the ratios.

i need a class in gearboxes 101 for dummies! help:confused2:
