Good outcome Randy - I think that's the best resolution, when everyone is happy.

Thanks for sharing.

First of all, the kid was not behaving well when replied to Randy's comment. I just want to say that before I light the following fuse.

As a veteran of 39 years of dealing with young people from junior high to college age in my teaching career, I have to say Randy was not exhibiting the best of social behavior either. He went in to pick up a rear remote kit, which has nothing to do with welding as far as I know. Maybe I'm wrong in this, but the kits I know of are bolt on items, no welding needed. Therefore, I conclude the "kid" was not talking to him or about him. He overheard or was eavesdropping on a conversation or comment between the kid and another employee, depending on whose perspective you look at it from.

From the point of view of the kid, Randy interrupted a conversation between two people he never saw before with a semi-smartmouth comment. The kid replied in a totally acceptable manner for someone his age in the vast majority of situations in which they find themselves. He reacted in a normal manner for a sub-30 person who is treated a bit rudely by a stranger. He didn't respond to Randy's rudeness with a smile and a "Sorry, sir, but I didn't think you would hear me. I wasn't referring to you and I shouldn't be talking about people who aren't present." He didn't back down from the rudeness directed his way, but treated it as a bit of sarcasm and replied similarly.

He did not treat Randy in the deferential manner Randy apparently felt was due him since he was a customer. Despite the fact that the original comment was not professional, the kid wasn't talking to Randy, nor about him. Randy was rude, eavesdropping, and interrrupting. The kid responded in a justifiably sarcastic or defensive way based on his social experiences. He just needs to learn to treat customers differently than he treats his friends and acquaintances. Consider that he avoided using the common street language that wouldn't get past the mods on this forum but that you hear between kids all the time in public situations, or on construction crews. He didn't cuss or swear, didn't tell Randy to kiss various parts of his anatomy or to perform biologically impossible acts. He treated Randy with a certain amount of respect, but not as much as he could have.

Randy, take your deals and run. The whole thing would never have happened if you hadn't started it with your comment. The kid didn't think he was being rude, and really meant no insult.

Kid??? Was the employee 17 or under? Or was he 18 an an adult.. and therefore responsible for everything he says and does.

Besides. As an employee.. he probably -should- refrain from making that comment about -anybody- present or not, especially within earshot of a customer... whether he was talking about that customer or not.

Where i work.. If a customer can 'overhear' you.. you can get in trouble.

We have had engineers disciplined that were talking to each other in a room, where clients were standing outside int he office... the clients could overhear the engineers talking thru the closed (hollow) door.. A client didn't like a comment heard, and reported it to a mangare.. then that went to the boss.. then back down the chain. That engineer is no longer employed...

It's all about pr... Ya simply got to keep your mouth shut in front of customers. Employers are looking at bottom line ( $ ).. and anything inthe way of that bottom line is a -liability- to them... doesn't matter if the comment was made was intended for someone or not.. or if the persons socio-economic status made them "ok" to say something like that based on their world experiences.. etc ( by the way.. IMHO....that kind of talk is a real 'load'.... People don't have any concept of personal responsibility any more. They are only interested in looking for excuses as to why they did something.. )

daTeacha,

Not very perseptive being a teacher for 39 years. I nowhere in my comments said it was a kid that made the comment. I said a young man was helping me at the counter when the comment was made. The person that made that comment is older then me and I'm 48. Now about some of your comments.

I have to say Randy was not exhibiting the best of social behavior either

Yout right. Should have just zipped my lip, got my parts and left.

Randy interrupted a conversation between two people he never saw before with a semi-smartmouth comment

You have no idea how smart mouth I can be. I was being polite that day with my comment but, you are correct again. Should have kept my mouth shut.

Randy was rude, eavesdropping, and interrrupting

Your right again.

The whole thing would never have happened if you hadn't started it with your comment

DANG! Your right again.

After being able to sleep on it and read the comments from members here I feel this morning that's it's all my fault and I should have never made the comment in the first place. So much so that I will not be excepting the offer made to me yesterday. What's the old saying, "my mouth wrote a check my bu*t can't cash"

I now wish it would have never happened. :(

You got me. I was wrong in figuring you were talking about a "kid" when you said young man. After reading through all the replies your post generated, I transferred the "young man" comment to the other guy, too. No way was I picturing some guy past 45.

Looks like we have an example of two wrongs not making a right at the dealership. Maybe you want to go over there and explain that. The guy will get chewed out for not being careful about where he says what, the dealer will feel that you are no longer offended and a decent guy afterall, and you might still want to take the deals they offered or something you're comfortable with, leaving everyone happy, more or less.

I honestly pictured some guy in his early twenties or so, but again, any employee should either know or learn better sooner or later. That guy obviously has had enough experience that ignorance of proper protocol is no excuse. He screwed up twice -- once with the initial comment and secondly in his reply to you -- and should have been more careful.

A kid new to the job is a different story than a guy that old. Still wrong, but still learning his way in the business world. Sorry I misunderstood you.

IMHO.. take the offer as it was presented.... The comment being made in earshot of a customer was the issue.. whether or not he was even talking about you or too you. As i have said. i work in an environment where there is -0- tolerance for -any- type of derogatory talk within earshop of a client... We are all 'grown-ups' It doesn't take but a modecum of self restraint to keep lips buttoned around paying customers.

This can kinda be compaired to the analogy of the person crossing the street getting hit by a car. .. It doesn't matter who was right .. being dead right doesn't help.. etc.

The comment itself was unacceptable and unbusinesslike.. it all got worse from there. It appears the dealer is taking the responsibility at that point.. etc. and doing the right thing. I'd get your parts.. etc, and if you think they are now a good dealer.. do some more business with them, if the opportunity arises... that would also be 'the right thing' to do. You don't have to go out of your way to do so.. but if the opportunity arises.. try it. As someone else pointed out.. word of mouth advertising hits home. If this dealer makes it up to you.. your positive comments will no doubt fall on member here, and in your local environment... In the end... the bad situation can work out for both of you... Kinda like the silver lining int he cloud.. etc.. just my .02$

Amazing how different people look at different situations differently.
I have learned something just from reading all the different posts.
Guess I need to watch my mouth around customers too!
