Tiller General tiller opinions, questions

I just bought a Maschio H165 used from a Massey Furgeson dealer that had a rental business but was getting out of it. I will need to replace the entire set of blades next year, but they will be fine for this year. This thing runs in the $3500 range new but I got it for $750. It's quite and smooth and appears in great shape. I also bought a 6' Challenger rotary mower, the MC616, for $400. I check all gear boxes and drives boxes for oil content and color.

Anyway, you might call around to implement and tractor dealers seeing if anyone wants to sell a rental unit. Yes they get used but are more likely to get serviced regularly in my opinion that some old rusty tiller on craigs list.

There are a couple of "gray market" dealers around here that sell used yammars for around $600. I hear they are good enough for gardens and such.
I'll second that. That's were I purchased my tiller a 4.5' model. A few dings on the sheet metal but unit was so quite I had to turn around to be sure it was running. Tines on mine were almost new and still had lot of paint on them. Does a better job than I had ever expected.

I was in the same position a few months ago, looking for a bargain tiller. I did all my research and called several dealers, and looked at the posts here for tiller feedback. I purchased a 72" King Kutter II at my local TSC for $1500. I put it on my 3830 Kubota and it has done a great job. I think that for the money they are hard to beat, this is a all gear drive tiller that weighs 780 lbs. The only fault that I have with the tiller and that has been reported on this forum many times is the lack of a quality paint job, but having said that I find no other faults at this time.

Good luck finding a good used tiller. I tried to find one a few years back and most I found were well used.If I could find one at all. E-bay has a few good used ones but most I found were far away and no shipping. The last one I found was a used Bush Hog brand at a local Kubota dealer. He wanted $800 for it and the tines were shot it had never seen a shed and I could not find any paint on it. I checked out a Caroni at our local Rural King store and bought it brand new for around $900. Shiny new paint and new tines.I have been very pleased with it so far.

My advice if you want to stay in the $500-600 range is to find someone else nearby and go half-sies on a new one. I just bought a 48" KK II because spring is coming and in the last 3-4 months I have not seen any used tillers for sale anywhere near me.

Wow, I am in the same position, trying to find a tiller. They have the 48" tillers (unknown to me who manufactures them) at Rural King for $1200. I'm ready to pay that much, but I'm not sure about sizing. I've got a Kubota L3000, which is 30 HP and 60"-ish wide at the rear tires. Will I be sorry I bought a 48" tiller? Do you need your tiller to cover the width of your tires? If so, how big of a tiller will my L3000 power? This is for small/moderate gardening (maybe 1/3-1/2 acre).

I want at least a 5 footer to cover the tracks of my 3520. You can offset them to one side and work in a direction that covers your trailing side. This is what I do with the 4footer I have borrowed, but it is not ideal, for me at least.

I priced a woods 60" yesterday and it was $1600ish, for a chain drive. Is the KK inherently better since it is gear driven? Or are there other design considerations that could make a chain drive superior to gear?

I want the tiller to cover the tire tracks. Yes on the offset if tiller isn't as wide as the track.

Gear Vs Chain, seem to me the width of the drive cover would be wider for gear drive than for the chain and this should be a consideration if drive is on outside of the tiller and if tiller will be used at a depth where the cover is below the ground surface.
