Several reasons to run a generator when power is out, from well pumps, freezers, refrigerators, heating, AC, TV's, computers, washers, dryers, stoves and microwaves.
Some people have enough generator that a power outage is just a minor aggravation, if they choose to pay for that much generator and fuel that's their business.
If it's a family with kids or elderly that could be different then someone that's gone to work all day and doesn't need to be home in decent weather.
When running mine I actually have cleaner power with less low voltage drops with high loads the I do with utility power, my transformer and meter are several hundred feet from the
house and a large 110 volt load can dim the lights occasionally.
