Are you referring to me? If so, that is a little different than what you said back in Oct of 2014:

You mock a man that can admit that he had made a mistake or overlooked something? rare to have anyone here with the ability to do such.

Mocking? I think you mean MossRoad.
I was just pointing out that back in 2014, you said that a Kirkkey setup was legal and now when I bring it back up, you are saying (or implying) that its not legal, that its dangerously unsafe and that I feel that I know more than the NEC and other code agencies.

The kirkkey can be legal in some circumstances in some districts with some inspectors . While the kirkkey may "work". There are better solutions . If a proper meter base whole service break before make transfer switch can be added for a measly $600. I don't know why a jackleg cob job is preferred ?
In particular when an auto start/auto transfer genset can be used.

Are you saying that a Kirkkey is not a break before make connection? It sure seems that having to turn off the main breaker, lock the kirkkey, walk over to a different panel, unlock a kirkkey and turn on the generator breaker would qualify as break before make.

If it was feasible to have the generator sitting next to the main breaker panel, I would use a transfer switch or an interlock like the Square D one that I linked. The whole reason that I am looking at this is to avoid having a generator sitting in sight of the road where it will be annoyingly loud when it runs.
Switching to use a dedicated line to where I would like to put the generator would require over 250' of conduit and wire ($300), plus a interlock ($600) and the wire to connect the interlock ($40?)
For something that MIGHT get used once a year with a $500 generator, it seems a little high.

Now, if I use a breaker interlock (such as the Square D one) rather than a 200 amp switch, there is no real difference in where there will be power in the breaker box between that and a kirk key lock setup.

A breaker interlock at the first distribution panel ?
That is what we have been discussing...

Here is my tentative layout:

my generator sets about 150 feet behind the house, in a shed I built for it, I ran a conduit under ground and ran aluminum service wire, back to the transfer switch, and there is also a wires running back to the shed for the power in the shed, and to power the well which is near,

some times all you can do is spend some money to do it correctly,

I prefer a manual transfer switch, I have nothing that is such that need power 24/7, and generators are expensive to run, can be very expensive, the larger ones can go through 2 to 5 gallons of fuel an hour depending on loads,

So if we or need to use the generator, I will start it and run for the need, it is large enough for keeping the well and freezers and refrigerators, going for some recharge time, and then shut off, for until a real need is needed,

I my self would not go to an automatic switch and auto start unless there was medical equipment or some other need that needed a constant supply of power,

a few led camping lanterns will provide light for pennies.

Why would you call that a jackleg cob job?

Its safe. Its simple. Its elegant. Its a wise use of funds.
