Generator repair

Has anyone swapped out the generator assembly on a non working generator? I was given a 6000 watt generator with a honda 11hp engine that runs perfect except the windings on the electric motor went. Its a $2000 unit new so id like to give it a try. Any suggestions.

Could you use one of the HF generator heads? They are pretty inexpensive, but I have no idea if they make clean power.

I've changed out engines and/or short blocks, but changing the generator end would probably not be worth the cost.
