Meh, the cold really isn't so bad. Here's the thing about extreme cold (here anyway) : it can really only get below zero when the air isn't moving. So if it's frigid cold, there's almost no extra wind chill. I was outside playing with me kids all weekend when it was between 10 and 16 degrees during the day - bundled up, no problem at all, for hours.

And my house and woodstove don't seem to know the difference, still stays above 70f all night long from a final load of logs at 11pm bedtime. Fresh, beautiful layer of snow this morning - I love winter!

It's very similar here. We may have a few frigid days but most years they are few and far between. I can usually plan so that I don't get far from the truck on those days, or am doing something which keeps me warm. Snowshoes will do that automatically. ;)

Now I'm seeing that the PAC NW could get packed with 20" or more?

Finally got some snow here at the end of last week, but it’s been too cold for the kids to get outside to play. Looks like the cold is going to stick around until the middle of next week.

Not getting any better. Need to drag more wood up from the pile, but the hill is iced over and I'm not at all sure the tractor will come up it. I'm not even sure I can get down to the pile without sliding past it.

Schwann's man came today. He walked about 400 yards down my lane. He said he almost busted his rear end a couple of times to get our order to our door. He walked on the grass as much as possible as even our very rough gravel road was very slippery he said. Our asphalt driveway up by the house is a skating rink. We haven't been out for days now, and it looks like another week for us. No one has tried to come up the driveway since the freezing rain set in over the sleet. It is supposed to be -5 on Monday night with "heavy snow" whatever that means. This is the harshest Feb. for many years here. I thought the Schwann's man was pretty darn dedicated.

Thursday morning, the road was ice covered. The county had been by a couple of times the day before, but hadn't done much good. Tracking showed I had a package coming by mail. No other vehicles had come by at all, so I figured the mail would not run. Then I looked out and saw the mail car coming. I have no idea why since the roads were not safe. The state roads may have been OK for them to deliver those routes, but not these narrow, winding hilly back roads.

My driveway was the same, solid ice. I did the foot-to-foot shuffle to make it across to the grassy area to get the mail. Expected it to melt off by yesterday, but with no Sun at all, that didn't happen. Tossed out what little salt I had left from last year and that took care of it before nightfall.

Yard is still iced over and I'm not sure if it'll be safe to go get firewood as I mentioned above. If we get snow on top of this, all bets are off as to when the ground will clear. Not expected to get above 32° until at least Friday.

-31 degrees this morning according to my Accuweather app on my phone but my outdoor gauge is only -22 degrees. Looking forward to a high of -5 today.

It is 8 this morning.. Colder weather expected in a couple of days. 8 for us is cold. The 3 day forecast calls for a high Monday of 4 and a low of -8. With heavy snow. I haven't seen weather like this here in at LEAST a decade. When they say "unseasonably cold". They were not kidding.

Scraper vs box blade

Update now forecast is -20 tonight, -21 Sunday and -18 on Monday. Moved some snow today so I could get out and propane truck in. My FEL sure doesn't like this cold temperature, too slow so just my box blade.

-25 at 6:30 this morning and the Davis weather station says we had +3 at 10:30 but I missed it. Back down to -5 at noon. About 5" of snow on the ground now. Thankfully the wind has stayed down.

You could not be more wrong (believe it or not)...LoL...!

It's all about the controlling factors (winds aloft/ jet stream etc...)...if conditions don't change (and often enough they don't) accurate forecasts out two weeks are easily possible...

Like I've said the NWS updates their forecasts whenever the latest pertinent data is collected...during certain times of the year 10 day forecasts will not change one iota...and are extremely accurate...other times the newly collected data is applied and they update the forecasts...

Maybe out there in the flatland, weather is predictable. In mountainous areas, we're lucky if they get the current temperature within 10 degrees, and predicting rain is a joke. It is fun to watch the storms off the Pacific blow by and know that the rest of the country will see it soon. The one today is a big wet one, so you can expect serious snow in what, 3-4 days?

LoL...I'd hardly call this flatland... ...If you can find a flat spot it was made with a dozer...!...steep slopes and dense forest to over 5K elev....some low areas rain forest like (very unique)...

The NWS is very accurate with their forecasts here...but staying up to date is paramount...including reading the latest bulletins and listening to the latest WX radio broadcasts...

The NWS uses the latest data available closest to whatever location is queried...if you live in an area well away from an airport etc...and your elevation is higher than the closest airport...you really can't expect exact temperature predictions...as a rule if you observe your local NWS forecasts it does not take long to figure out how many degrees you need to add or subtract (mental calibration) for your exact location...once you get used to figuring the adjusted temp. you'll find they (the NWS) is very accurate...

Gonna be 30 deg below normal for a few days then slowly climb. About 7 days from now we may get to "normal" temps.

Normal would be good for a change!

I does help that the weather has been moving toward you for the last 1000 miles. Weather forecast get better the closer to current time it gets. For instance, i can forecast the weather without consulting any of the NWS data, by looking out my window. :D

"Avoid all unnecessary travel".

I always do that. But I know people that run to the store three or four times a day. I see people out that can't be doing much more than joyriding. They pass by, then less than 15 minutes later, they pass by again. There is NO place you can go and return from in that time here.

If you slide off the road in some places close by, you can slide down a ravine and never be seen again.

When I lived in phoenix the joke was, easiest weatherman job in the world, sunny and....fill in the blank. Not a big fan of Scottsdale but, I do miss the warm sunny weather. Summers are tuff.

Now NC has become the easiest weather to forecast......rain.
