Getting rid of moles

Metal traps and a little patience will do the trick. They are generally not very numerous. A single animal does a surprising amount of damage.

Bird, I was kidding around, call it a Friday the 13th joke. I agree with you, I don't seriously want to torture any creatures, even moles. A quick, painless death is perfect for them. The only reason I kind of do want to see the dead moles is just as proof that they are really gone and that they didn't just take their damage to my neighbors' yards. I'm not really a mean guy, honest. :)

I suspected that might be the case, Carl. Just wanted to be sure.

Moles have been talked about in the rural living section on and off. MossRoad appears to be the resident expert. As I recall, he found a mole trap made by victor to work the best. I bought a spear trap elsewhere and have had no luck at all with it, and it is a pain to set, too.

I wish I could train some moles to break my garden in the Spring and then go somewhere else for the rest of the year.

I've been using bubble gum for years and it works well.

So far I've used 10 sticks of Juicy Fruit gum and all indications are that my moles appreciate it and like the flavor.:(:confused2:

I have a Rat Terrior dog and he is on them things like a fat kid on a cupcake. He catches several a month, plays with them for a while, buries them, and God knows what he does with them later.

Moles don't chew gum.

Trust me, most of these suggestions are urban myths. There are two tried and proven ways to get rid of burrowing pests, pocket gophers included. I have tried them all and the best is to get a CO2 tank and slowly release the gas into a burrow. The CO2 is heavier than air and will sink into the nest and suffocate the little buggers without giving them notice. Smoke bombs etc just make them go elsewhere till the smell goes away.

The second is to make a ghophernator. The commercial versions are expensive but I rigged one up with my acetylene and oxygen tanks and a homemade ignitor so I could 25 feet away from the hole. Release a small mount of gas and oxygen, then hit the ignitor. The concussion will kill them immediately and is very satisfying. Being a retired weapons mechanic I was familiar with explosives :)

I recommend the CO2, much safer.

I once touched off the gophernator and didn't realize they had burrowed under my driveway lampposts. When I set it off it blew the tops off of my lamps into the air about 50 feet and almost hit me in the head. You also have to be careful if they have burrowed under the house;)
