Getting "Rid Of" your Aluminum Cans

One other change that has impacted the economics of aluminum can recycling is the weight of the can. The effort to collect them remains the same but the weight of the can was about 3 ounces when they were first introduced and is about 1/2 ounce now.

Several years ago I watched a very well organized documentary about this. Down to studies showing how thin the can could be without you crushing it trying to get it open. Mega Bucks study. Very interesting. If you have ever encountered a can who's company went on the thin side of the diagnostics you understand.

Several hundred years from now our landfills will be valuable mining properties.

I always laugh... first the bottled water industry convinced people to buy tap water in 12 oz containers, rather than from the faucet. Then they made the containers so flimsy that you might wear your purchase, rather than drinking it.
I do buy bottled water though... in gallon jugs to keep in my trucks. I generally pay around 1$/gallon, which is less than what it costs for a 12 oz one serving bottle.
I used to refill those gallons several times, which is how I know how flimsy they've gotten.

I don't think it was that way 10 years ago, things change. I do remember single serve plastic water bottles everywhere, not an aluminum can to be found. The devils in the details but the reason for most of these crazy laws favoring lemonade over coke is special interests. That's the point.

When you wonder, why this and not that, just follow the money.

Bought and sold.

I'm sure what qualifies as a deposit can/bottle varies from state to state. In our neighboring state Vermont carbonated beverage containers are deposit, non-carbonated are not. Maine, our neighbor to the east requires a deposit on non-carbonated beverages too.
Maybe that's the deal in Oregon?

If I'm not mistaken NH still doesn't have a bottle deposit. One of the radio stations (WTOS) has a live weather forecast every AM... and years ago Russ joked about buying in NH and cashing them in in Maine. I remember thinking that wasn't a wise thing to be advertising on radio... a while after that they had a similar conversation and it was very apparent that he'd been stepped on for his comment.

No deposit law in N.H. Some cans/bottles that are sold here are marked as deposit, some aren't.

I can see why the powers-that-be might frown on someone suggesting buying beverages out of state and redeeming the the containers in state.

We always have been good about aluminum/glass/plastic recycling. There are new processes developed in Sweden that use steam to crack plastics back to their basic components, allowing the resulting materials to be used in manufacturing plastic items of the same high quality as the original.

A research group at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, has developed an efficient process for breaking down any plastic waste to a molecular level. The resulting gases can then be transformed back into new plastics of the same quality as the original. The new process could transform today's plastic factories into recycling refineries, within the framework of their existing infrastructure.
The fact that plastics do not break down, and therefore accumulate in our ecosystems, is one of our major environmental problems. But at Chalmers, a research group led by Henrik Thunman, Professor of Energy Technology, sees the resilience of plastic as an asset. The fact that it does not degrade makes it possible for circular usage, creating a true value for used plastic, and therefore an economic impetus to collect it.

We should not forget that plastic is a fantastic material it gives us products that we could otherwise only dream of. The problem is that it is manufactured at such low cost, that it has been cheaper to produce new plastics from oil and fossil gas than from reusing plastic waste, says Henrik Thunman.

A garbage incinerator at Brooks, north of Salem, Oregon, has been in operation for decades. It reduces plastic and paper products to ash, generates electricity, and the recover metals out of the ash.
