One other change that has impacted the economics of aluminum can recycling is the weight of the can. The effort to collect them remains the same but the weight of the can was about 3 ounces when they were first introduced and is about 1/2 ounce now.
Several years ago I watched a very well organized documentary about this. Down to studies showing how thin the can could be without you crushing it trying to get it open. Mega Bucks study. Very interesting. If you have ever encountered a can who's company went on the thin side of the diagnostics you understand.
