Getting Serious About Buying My First Tractor......Which One?

There is still the LS to look at. I got mine south of Birmingham, Colombiana. Good guys to work with. I felt that I got more for my money. But make sure that you drive them all. I had a Mahindra picked out until I test drove it. But my son has one and loves it. Different model. Being in Alabama, I just couldn't buy orange. (But it is a good tractor)

The gears in the middle are the one thing I am afraid I will get tired of. I like the simplicity of the tractor, but know if I had to do a lot of FEL work it would get old. Just something else for me to think about.

I grew up on the old Fords like the 5000's and 7000's along with a 340B industrial loader. All had the gear shift in the center because that's just the way they were back then. For some people the simplicity is desireable because it's also reliable.

I opted for HST and like the layout of the 2655 which is part of why I bought it. It does have the range selector to the left of the operator and the shuttle versions have the range selector on the left and the gear selector on the right. Best to look at other models even in the same brand. The 2500 and 2600 Mahindras are built by TYM so they are different than the 4000 series and others actually built by Mahindra.

I've been doing a lot of reading and watching videos lately. I am between a Mahindra 4540 or a Kubota MX5200 or L4701DT. My land as you can see from the aerial pic is about 95% pasture land. I have a couple of hills that I bush hog, the one pic gives you a general idea of one of the hills (the other hill is steeper). As of now, I do not have any animals on my land. I just bush hog it when needed, but am planning on eventually getting some animals (probably cows). We have roughly 26 acres, and the chance of us expanding that is slim to none. Just looking for any input from all you experienced folks. This will be my first tractor, and I am a city boy living on some land :).

What I like about the Mahindra is how heavy it is (5k). I have also been told it's a benefit that it doesn't have to ReGen. I know the dealer personally and he is stand up guy. I honestly don't think I'd have any issues with warranty work.

With the Kubota, I have heard great things about the reliability, and they have some great rates/package deals right now. The one thing and maybe the only thing I don't like on the Kubota is how light it is compared to the 4540.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Limited experience here on bigger machines but also from Alabama. My dad and stepmom have a 2014 MX5200 to manage rough cut mowing (7ft Land Pride), moving hay, etc. on 35 acres in N AL and 70 acres in middle GA. They haven't had any issues at all. I probably would have picked the MX5800 since it spends more time with the bale spear in tighter quarters and doesn't do any ground engaging projects outside of a box blade.

Looking forward to hearing what you get!

My father in laws tractor is and old Ford with the gears in the middle. I don't mind it to much ,but I think it would be frustrating if I was doing a lot of FEL work. Also, if I ever had to bail of it, those gears would be a problem.

For bush hogging 26 acres in the Alabama heat I’d want a cab tractor. Check out the Kubota Grand L line with a cab, either the L4060 or L4760 will turn a 6ft hog no problem. They also have the HST+ dual range transmission which is sweet. And they’re heavy.

The Yanmar YT347/359 are also awesome tractors with Japanese quality and refinement.

First of all, Geaux Tigers! But, an LS is essentially a new holland as far as the less than 60 Hp tractors go. My 2014 ls g3038 is a new holland workmaster 40 with a different shade of blue and a different name on the side. I really like it. I have the shuttle shift version by choice. Just of good a tractor as the big names for a good bit less money.

Spending that much money...I'd play it safe and simple. Kubota. So many people own Kubotas, the support and available information out there is really good. The extra weight of the Mahindra is probably not that important once you get up to the size you are looking at. Especially for mostly mowing. Weight is good, bit is not the end all be all. You can always add weight. My :2cents:.

Take a look at a Massey Ferguson 1750M. Great tractor. No regens, no DPF.

Take a look at a Massey Ferguson 1750M. Great tractor. No regens, no DPF.

That's not entirely accurate. They don't have a regen which forces the tractor to burn hot for a period of time to burn the soot off of the collector but MF (and Mahindra) has a mCRD (DOC system) system which runs hotter all the time to burn off the soot. This is not new technology and is really is dishonest for a tractor mfg to tout this as a benefit over DPF.

DOC is a catalytic converter. The exhaust gas passes through a material which oxidizes/breaks down the environmentally "harmful" stuff. "The diesel oxidation catalyst is designed to oxidize carbon monoxide, gas phase hydrocarbons, and the SOF fraction of diesel particulate matter to CO2 and H2O"

A DPF is a more extensive breakdown system. It usually has a DOC, then a DPF. Some systems also use Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), in addition, which is yet another addition, spraying that fluid the exhaust to further break down the "harmful" particles.
" Exhaust gas passes through the DOC and then into the DPF where Pariculate Matter is collected on the walls of the DPF. The PM collected is then oxidized to remove it from the DPF. This is known as regeneration. When operating conditions maintain sufficient exhaust temperatures, the DPF is continually self-regenerating. This is known as passive regeneration and results in clean exhaust out of the tailpipe. On very infrequent occasions, an active self-regeneration is required to remove a build-up of PM in the DPF, due to insufficient exhaust temperatures. Exhaust temperatures are raised by injecting a small amount of fuel upstream; The resulting chemical reaction over the DOC raises exhaust gas temperatures high enough to oxidize the PM from the filter."
