Sometimes even just to tell us they don't drink. Yeah... we care.
Yep… I have opinions and beliefs with no first hand experience…

Having heavy drinkers as neighbors leaves a lasting impression on a kid…

How come Mr. Wilson has a red nose and why does he get up at lunch time and why does he call a taxi when he has a car or at 16 driving him and his wife home from a bar and getting $20 for my trouble which paid 2 weeks of my gas… he died from a bad liver…

When did I say, or even imply, that?

You seem to be in the wrong thread, unless it actually is your goal to just try to ruin it for others.

My parents taught us to drink in moderation. I never remember them drunk. Mom would act like it, but I was psychological. She'd literally start acting goofy before she'd tasted the first glass of wine.

We typically had a small amount for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. Not one person in the family has a drinking problem. Everyone has a glass now and then. They say some of it is genetic.

Could be wrong but I believe he was agreeing with you.

Relax. Have a drink on me. :giggle:

Maybe, but the Mr. Wilson comments sure made it sound otherwise. Sorry if I reacted wrong. :ROFLMAO:

It's over 35 years ago so I think I'm safe telling this story... The U.S. Forest Circus (oops, I mean, Service) would usually transfer older professionals (allegedly) to some far away place in hopes to shed (possible) dead weight... This happen to our unit and we were given 6 months to finish up our research studies (Entomology and Toxicology unit). Then we were to show up a few states away for our next paycheck.

What does this have to do with drinking??? Well, all 6 of us quit but in the 6 months we got REALLY good at mixing Bloody Mary's in the morning instead of coffee (...we took care of shutting the unit down). It was a very good recipe we had down.

Side note, the secretary got tipsy (more than she should have) so next morning I made her a virgin Bloody Mary and put a small splash of vodka on top... You would have thought the whole drink was 100% vodka the way she acted extremely drunk (best experiments are on people!!! Fun times!!)

I’m referring to me as a non drinker… I enjoy reading about what others post but have no first person information to add from imbibing myself.

I can only contribute as an observer… no way would it even be possible for me to have a favorite or comment from personal knowledge as to taste, kick, hangover, etc.

Mr Wilson was the retired man down the street where I grew up… he and is wife we’re different than the other neighbors and it was only later did I realize the way they lived was due to their drinking… getting up late, no longer able to drive, etc. and he really did have a red nose.

Ditto! :D

I have the chance or inclination to drink in the morning less than once per year. But if you're gonna do it, do it right!

Usually, it's reserved for a special brunch.

I was thinking of Mr. wilson from Dennis the Menace.

I have to rack my brain pretty good... haven't made them since... above is pretty close but I do remember instead of V8 above we used Mott's Clamato Juice (is that still around???) Green Olives, with a dash of it's juice, too. Celery for sure... Had to use it to stir!!

Celery salt, heavy on pepper, Tabasco Sauce and Worcestershire Sauce (NO Franks Red Hot Sauce - I don't think that was invented yet!!!) ***Correction, wow, it's old but it wasn't marketed around here...

Might have to start more research to find the best Bloody Mary, heading to the mountains in a day or two!!!

EDIT: Thanks BigTiller, Horseradish!!! White and straight!!!

I used to put a teaspoon of dill pickle juice in my bloody marrys but it has been so long ago that I forgot what else I put in it...maybe so horseradish juice? I don't know.

I make a rue for bloody mary's.

Bottle of Worcestershire Sauce
Jar of horseradish
celery salt
pepper
hot sauce
slice up some jalapenos or habaneros and throw them in

mix it all up in a mason jar and for best result let it sit in the fridge for about a week, but it can be used right away as well.

When it's time for a bloody, ice in a glass. spoon or two of the rue depending how you like it, vodka, then your favorite tomato juice or bloody mary mix. Couple olives and you're good to go!

Thanks BigTiller... that jogged my memory, we did use celery salt and horseradish, that was a MAIN ingredient that I forgot!! I edited my post above to reflect that, too...

So besides making / trying a gin and tonic; Bloody Mary's this weekend!!!

Here is a standard recipe. Hopefully Old and Tired will modify it to his standards.

Ingredients:
  • Vodka: 1.5 - 2 ounces
  • Tomato Juice: 4 ounces (or about 1/2 cup)
  • Lemon Juice: ¼ fluid ounce (or half a lemon's worth of juice)
  • Worcestershire sauce: 2 dashes
  • Hot pepper sauce: 4 dashes (such as Tabasco®)
  • Salt and pepper: 1 pinch of each (or to taste)
  • Ice cubes: 1 ½ cups, more as needed
  • Garnish: 1 celery stalk, lemon or lime wedge, olives, etc.
Instructions:
  1. Prepare the glass: Rub the rim of a tall glass (like a pint or Collins glass) with a lemon or lime wedge and coat with celery salt or plain salt.
  2. Add ingredients: Fill the glass with ice cubes. Pour in the vodka, tomato juice, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, salt, and pepper.
  3. Mix: Gently roll the drink between two glasses or stir with a bar spoon to combine and chill. Avoid vigorous shaking, as this can cause the tomato juice to foam.
  4. Garnish: Add a celery stalk, lemon wedge, olives, or other desired garnishes.
