gin poles

i can't get the winch to stand the poles up, is there a certain distance the bottom sheave has to be placed, or what is the trick?

i have 10ft poles mounted in the bed of my pickup. right at the back of the bed (tailgate), 8000lb worm drive ramsey, they are live poles flipped forward resting on the headache rack, the winch will not flip the poles forward on it's own with out me helping pick them up first. i don't know why they won't flip forward with the winch.

yes, cable through bottom sheave, then to top sheave,then to bumper.

one quick look at the angle of the dangle should tell the story.

think of the arc that the attaching point on the boom travels... does it intially swing away from the winch?

There's a lot of oilfield winch trucks around here and usually they're rigged this way...

I am hoping to use jayste picture. If your set up looks like the picture set up, there is no reason your poles shouldn't pull up. We always used chains as the brace "guy" system instead of the cables in the picture. The chains allowed changing the angle of the dangle by pulling one "guy" chain and adjusting the other and then evening the other up. The only way I know of getting the poles back on the headache rack is to slack off the winch line, pull the guy chains until the poles break over center and then let them down with the winch.

Words of Caution;
1. Chains as the guy braces are probably not as safe as the cables.
2. Don't put to much slack in the winch line when pulling/putting back on the headache rack or you will have a crash.
3. Pull out on the guy chains or push down, don't try to pul staight on the guy chains or you will get a hernia. It's a geometry thing and I don't have the intelligence or time to try and explain it.
4. Some systems used another set of chains at the bottom of the poles to keep the poles from going back to the headache by backing into something with the winch line loose.

Going to presume to raise the A frame it is too strait a pull from the top of the A frame to the winch. If there were a little more angle between the two features it might work better.

I'm judging from this picture that the end section of cable (from top of poles to bumper) is too close to being inline with the poles and doesn't have enough angle. One option would be to lift the top (starter lift at each use or permanently raising the rest).

Maybe you could make a lift starter tool for the rear connection point. Say about a 2' steel tube that would attach to the point where the cable end is attached and a hook on top for the cable. That would raise the cable end and give more angle. Just a thought.

The wheels spun a little more. It could be as simple as using a 2'-3' wooden 2x6 or 2x8 and stuff it between the cable end and the bumper to raise the cable angle. I would make some kind of clamp or guide to the cable so it doesn't slip out of place.

Just to make sure we're looking at the right end of things, are you saying the winch won't pick the poles up off the headache rack? Or won't flip them forward to stow on the headache rack?

If the former, the other suggestions are right. The cable to the bumper is too in-line with the poles and can't get the leverage to pop them up.

If the latter, I don't think the poles should tip forward to the headache rack without help. It would be too easy to tip under load if that were the case.

I'm thinking your thrust is inline with the poles it needs to be above them to get it started.

In the rigging from the hook to the top block prop the line up with a 4x4 perpendicular to the poles about 4' above the pole to get it started.

I try and draw something up and attach it.

I have never used a winch as small as 8000#, but I can't imagine what is going wrong with your set-up. Does the winch run out of power? I think we are over analizing the situation. It has to do with the length of the winch line. Shorten the line and the poles have to go up, stall the winch, or buckle the poles. Lengthen the line and the poles will drop back on the headache rack. It does take some pretty good inital power to start to raise the poles. The lower the poles sit on the headache rack the more power required to raise.
