Eddie, I saw an article in the newspaper about something like that. It made me kind of nervous. Now I try to hold back a little in case I'm not as much like Albert Einstein as I thought I was.:( :( :(

Since it was illegal to begin with it's kinda pointless to argue their intentions. But where I live in NY it's not. You can't use buckshot but in some area's you can use a rifle. All depends on the situation.

I've done deer drives all the time. The situation requires advanced planning / conversation with all involved. The guys in the middle shouldn't shoot at all anyway because the idea is to push them elsewhere to people.

Any negative press is all people want to read about anyway. Many more people are decent, understanding, law abiding hunters who like to do what they do.

Nobody wants to read about the nice normal people who make up the rest of the hunting population because it's boring....

I helped the owner of land where I hunt with my time, chainsaws, wood splitter and a weekend of sweat. For this I still shared the property with other hunters who didn't offer anything for the right to be there. We still managed to get along and not shoot each other.

Anything people do in life has a few bad apples. Education is still only effective to some not all.

Could we pick on anything else possibly?

DAP, I use to hunt years ago with a bunch of ex co-wprkers. They had that mentalitity that if it is brown it is going down. Or I should say that was what they would say when we hit the woods. I never saw or heard of any of them doing anything stupid while hunting. I for one won't shoot anything until I know what i am shooting at. I still think about that hunter having his gun trained on me everytime I hit the woods. It is not something I would like to ever have repeated.

Byron Bob, They say that stupid is as stupid does. That goes for all types in society. I have one next door to me. I cannot get into that conversation as it got locked down twice. He has yet to learn his lesson and still today 18 months later tries to tell people that he is the victim and not the violator (wetlands issues, re-routing of water, illegal trespass).

I once worked with this young lady who use to dance all the time at work while her machine was running. I was her setup man. One night she asked me if my wife would be jealous of her if she knew that I was working with her? I looked her up and down really slow. I then looked her right in the eyes and said no, not at all.

Like mentioned above, some people just don't get it. They have this idea in their head that they are perfect or that everything they do is right. When all along they haven't a clue.

Look at how many rear end collisions are caused by stupid people that haven't a clue as to what they are supposed to be doing when they are driving. Five years ago my daughter is leaving high school at the end of the day. She doesn't get 1/2 mile from school before another high schooler rear ends her. The girl never scraped her windshield and had a bunch of her friends in the car chatting. She pushed my daughter into the car in front of her. My daughter's Honda folded right up. It was a total loss. Thank God for insurance. Fortunately for all parties involved no one was injured and they all were wearing seat belts.

Last June my wife is pulling into the post office. She had to stop for traffic coming from the other direction. A kid driving his brother's car slams into the back of her Acura. Nobody gets hurt except for the cars. My wife's car sustained $7600 worth of damage. The other car, a small Toyota was totalled. The kid told my wife he was changing the radio station and not paying attention to what he was doing. Can you say STUPID?

I've often said......Granted one wish by the genie in the magic latern, I wouldn't wish for world peace, fabulous wealth, not even the end of all diseases. I would wish that whenever anyone did or said something stupid that they would be dropped to their knees with debilitating pain for 30 seconds that would let them know that they just commited a stupid act. The world would forever be a better place as stupid people really don't know that they are stupid. This would let them know and would train them to wise up.

Deer drives are a great way to hunt that is physically demanding and requires knowledge of terrain and the target animals flight paths. Safety is always a big issue and we haven't come close to having a close encounter with a bullet if done correctly.

I believe that too many folks don't have a clue about how people other than themselves live and survive. Hunting..........deer drives.......serving in combat......living in rural America.......etc are things that we take for granted that everone knows about. Well, they do not. City folks, non-hunters think that everones else is just like them and have the same values (or lack thereof) and think just like them.

What works in New York city, probably doesn't make sense in rural America. Let's give others on both sides of the fence some slack and not so quick to condemn what each other does without walking a mile in that person's shoes.

I've been in ambushes where the noise of gunfire was enormous for 10 minutes and both sides were TRYING to kill each over. Afterwards........no injuries, no blood trails nor bodies. With all that gunfire, you are amazed that no one was hit.

Only the Lord up above knows when our time is up and when it is.........that's it!

Stupid people will never get it and there's nothing anybody can say or do to convince them otherwise. It's just a genetic thing they lack. Eddie

That is a pretty good paraphrase of one of my favorite insults:

"You are so stupid, but you're not responsible - it's genetic."

There were several fatalities this year . one was 1st day of shot gun season, a 20 yr old was killed a full 30~40 min before the official start time which is 30 min prior to sunrise. shot by his cousin or uncle (forget which) . who had to run to nearest home to call 911 call came in 29 min prior to start time... :( my Brother n law was shot back in 80 something while hunting deer. hit in the leg by a slug that was fired a pretty far away. left one heck of a bad spot for months. ;

also drivers, last spring /winter one of the local school athletes was killed when he ran into his bus shortly after it picked up his brother, (didn't scrape his window. ) for a while they thought the brother was IN the car too as he drove him to school most days. the brother was/is a wreck after the older boys death. :( car burnt after hitting the bus...

I agree with Doug. When I first took a hunter safety course many moons ago, The point was stressed to be positively sure of your target before putting your finger on the trigger. I hunt 75 acres (about 25 each on 3 properties) with only a few close friends and family. We all have the same train of thought being sure of our target. All our properties are posted and when doing a drive the drivers wear orange. The way I look at it is if someone shoots another person in the woods, they were not sure of their target and what is behind that target should the shot miss or go through. In my opinion, they should face the fullest extent of the law and never be allowed to own a gun again.

In this day and age, we no longer are DEPENDENT on wild game for sustenance, although it can be a supplement.

Supplement ??? Have you seen the price of beef. I never got beef until we got the school lunch program. Canned beef at that.

Ain't THAT the truth!! You read horror stories in The American Rifleman all the time about a robber suing the house owner who shoots him...and the robber winning!!!
As far a hunting, it requires a certain skill set. Hunting safely requires that much more.
Being an idiot though, whether hunting or driving or working, is perfectly OK.... It is tolerated more than anything else on the planet. Just look at all the laws and welfare to take care of those people.
