Took delivery of a new Massey Ferguson GC2300 with an FEL and a 4' tiller yesterday morning. Got to know it a little yesterday and worked about four hours with it today. My one single comment is, "I should have bought a tractor long before now!"
The wife wanted a bed of iris removed from the garden and replanted. About 5x15 in size. Her only stipulations were for it not to interfer with any mowing - no more stuff to go around. OK - not a problem.
I went to the edge of the lawn - where the bull brush begins. Used the loader to scalp things down a little - then backed in and applied the tiller to things. I created a 5x15 foot bed in about 5 minutes. Then drove over to the garden and brought the iris over to its new home by the bucket full. Went just deep enough to not hurt the bulbs. Total time to move the iris was about 20 minutes. And it looks like it grew there! It got watered in nicely by a quick passing shower. Now, realize that iris are tough and respond well to even rough transplanting. So I expect this little project will be a success.
Now, before the tractor it would have been a three or four day very hard work project with a shovel and lawn tractor pulling a little trailer. Then there would have been the added expense of going to the bone cruncher to fix my back.
Yep - I see lots of things that I'll do now - since no pain is involved.
