What is "big oil" and "big tobacco"? Where do they live? Where can I go to see them? What do they like for breakfast? Do they have to wait in line at the airport? Are they on the "no fly" list? Has either one ever won a grammy? An oscar? Where do they work? All this silly personification of non-persons is part of what confuses these discussions. I know who an individual is....I even have a fair idea what is meant when someone references "my doctor" or "my son's math teacher", but I have no idea who big oil or big tobacco are. Always seemed to me to be terms used to try to make people think of the boogeyman. If you're going to toss these terms around like they mean something, at least offer a very specific and detailed definition of what the term means. How about "big fear", "big government", or "big lie"? Do they live in the same neighborhood as "big oil"?

LMTC, big tobocco, big oil, big pharma, big banks..... are perjoritive terms as you seem to imply, because these industries pose a risk to society.

I tell you the scariest and most dangerous of all

BIG GOVERNMENT!

I agree fallbrook...but likely for very different reasons.

Wait, Be still my heart, dare I ask it. No

You probably are right that for very different reasons, we fear big government, and that is the beauty of the Constitution, minority rights are protected, while a majority is still served.
Your Thoughts?

Then my question still remains unanswered. Perjorative references a term meant to carry a negative effect, so there is a presupposition that whatever is being referenced is negative. I still ask...what is it? What is big oil? Is it a conglomerate of every oil company on the planet? Just a few big ones? Or something altogether different? In fact, you have made my point....it's a term used to attempt to evoke a negative feeling or express distaste, while not having to come up with specific details and reasons.

What risk? Again with the presuppositions.

As you might be waiting for a response, and he hasn't and he said that he "agreed" with me, let me respond.

Wish I could sing, I've got a great idea for a Paul Shanklin song: I'm a denier , set to I'm a believer.

First there must be a demon to focus the attention and anger of the proletariat. Big Oil, Big Pharma, Big Tobacco, Big Retail, Big Banks, Big Finance, etc. But they are also Big Employers? Don't they pay big taxes? Nevermind. Once the serfs anger is focused, they will accept any law or regulation against these Big Evils. Even though these regulations and laws end up hurting the little people by making them unemployed, that's for the better because then they become part of the collective, also known as Big Government. Big Government is one of only two Big things that are good, the other being Big Union. Big Government and Big Union are pure and righteous, whose only purpose is to serve and protect the proletariat and make sure everyone is equal and content, not happy, just content. Well, everyone except people in Big Government and Big Union. But they have to be better, so they can take care of the collective. It takes better people to balance giving the little people just the right amount of services. Not so much they become better and not so little lest they begin to grumble. It takes wisdom to balance, wisdom that only Big Government has. Not to worry though, Big Government has been doing this since the Great Society (what Big Government called itself in the olden days). That's when Big Government really grew, when the father figure in many households was replaced by Big Government. Those were the glory days. But they're coming back. Yes, there was a little set back when some little people looked behind the Big Global Warming curtain, but forcing people to run to Big Government for their very health, that will be the ultimate. Once everyone has Big Government health care, they will never vote for anyone that threatens this. Big Government will be perpetual and everlasting. From the alpha to the omega. Yes, that's when Big Government will get it's last and final name. From Great Society, to Big Government to Big Brother.

The Germans have a word for it: Schadenfreude.

LTMC and all: Sorry if you really did not understand. Assumed it was clear that "big Oil" refers to the multi-national Oil Corporations (I also include "coal interests") A a very recent post I use these to sites a references which speak to the back door funding of the denier groups and front door lip service to the issue of emissions. They include Exxon, Shell, BP and include others.

Shell and BP still funding climate change denial Leaves caution behind
Environmental Law Prof Blog: Exxon Continued to Fund Climate Change Denial Campaign in 2006

I did not use the term "perjorative". (excuse for the spelling but my spell checker fixed it) I simply made claims of how they were behaving and tried to reference it. You draw your own conclusions.

I assumed you were just giving me a hard time but if your were truly confused by the use of those phrases I apologize for not giving a straight answer. By the way I was not a member of the NEA - I was a member of New York Teachers Association because it was required. I'm not a fan of huge unions. I feel our local union (our school only ) was a good thing and I chose to be a member.

Its clear that Big Government is your fear. Should we eliminate all public sponsored health care? Seeing that defense includes a large potion of our budget (it uses half of the Dept of Energy's budget also) should that be downsized. How about some specifics.
