... the heaver the oil the sooner your going to spin a crank bearing seen it happen many times :confused:

Guess I don't get out much. Never heard of spinning a crank bearing from cold oil. Extreme cold conditions require 0w-30 in API service categories CG-4, CF-4 and CF. What is DMO? I Googled it and came up with hundreds of meanings but nothing related to oil.

I scratched my head for a coupla minutes over that one too. But I think he meant diesel motor oil, ostensibly 10W30 with an API rating of C-something. CJ-4 is current I think....

Went completely over my head. Heard of MDO, HFO, LSD, ULSD, MO, GT, etc., but no DMO. Oh well...

Back to the KATS thing again......we've got up to 2 ft snow coming in the next 36 hours and I'm prepping everything. KATS still works. Does anyone know if it shuts off by itself when coolant reaches a certain temp? I'm thinking of just leaving it plugged in during the upcoming blizzard.

I think the tank type heaters have thermostatic protection (not a thermostat), but the inline heaters have nothing. It wouldn't be all that difficult to install a small external adjustable contact type thermostat though.

Those things are always on. I use a heavy duty timer switch for my diesel heaters; set to turn on for about 2 hours before I anticipate starting the engines. On those days when I don't actually need to start the engines, the switch simply turns off after the preset period transpires. Here's a selection: heavy duty timer - Google Search

These are the surface mount snap-disc thermostats I was referring to. You can pick them up at appliance parts stores very inexpensively (they are used in clothes dryers and many home appliances, and are very effective). Wire in series. You can also get the industrial variety for $$$$$.

Surface Mount Snap Disc Thermostats from Fenwal

You can also use these in conjunction with Greg's timer.

Its probably too late now but I use a timer like Greg. With that said I picked up a Remote Unit for $10 at the local Rural King. It has a remote control and I will plug it into that and put a light bulb and the heater on it. That way I can just press the button and the light bulb will verify that its on for me.

Wireless Indoor/Outdoor Remote Control : Target

I can not find it on the site but this is basically it.
