Pond- Try Osteo Bi-Flex. It works better then Glyco-Flex II or Missing link. Plus it is cheaper.

I used to buy my heartguard there at KV but found it like $10 cheaper.

I had 6 bottles of it and threw them out since my rotties never got help from them. Waited 3 months and zero.

Yes obviously there will be a lower dosing for smaller animals as it goes by weight. If one did want to go the med route then they would need to consult their vet for proper dosage information and also to see if any pre-existing conditions could be aggravated by medicating. one shouldn't give an animal something with out an ok from a doctor.....even a homeopathic one. There are some in my state and i've heard good things about that approach but dont know much about it yet. Theres always a non medicating route, even in human medicine. I do also agree that there are doctors out there who do over medicate but most only prescribe when in the best interest of the patient. It's too bad people have bad experiences with their doctors, but its everywhere these days..even in the vet world.

Old man Willy has been on the glucosamine for a few weeks now. We have noticed a marked improvement in his movement. He is much more playfull than before. Thanks to everybody for their input.

The funniest part was we were discussing it with my Mother in Law. Her doc has recommended it for her arthritis. She wasn't too interested in the beef flavored powder to spread on her breakfast. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Stephen,

Sam I Am, my almost 11 year old boxer is on glucosamine. It does help. I have also had to inject him with glucosamine made for horses. It also helps. But the best thing I have found is Deramax. It is expensive but it really does help him. If the poor guy is in pain, ask your vet about it.

Re: Glucosamine for dog\'s aging joints?

My 9 year old wolfhound/shepard mix has been on Glucosamine HCL 1500mg / Condroitin Sulfate 1200mg for a couple of years now. He gets 1 in AM & 1 in PM. last spring the Vet recommended trying Duramaxx. He said it would either do nothing, or he would be like a new dog in a couple of days. A couple of days later he was like a pup again, so much so that when he chased the ball he turned so quickly he tore his ACL. That was a $1,200 bill. The Duramaxx works great, he doesn't seem to be hurting anymore. The vet does bloodwork every so often, I think the duramaxx is bad for the kidneys or liver. Ralph weighs in at over 130 lbs. so he gets the 100 mg pill once a day and still the two glucosamine/chondroitin every day. The duramax is expensive, over $2 a pill. You can get it at Petmeds but you still need a prescription from the vet.

The Duramaxx did the same for Sam. But he is just a tiny little guy, only 106 lbs. He still has his bad times, but most of the time he is just enjoying life!

I thought about Petmeds, but the vet takes such good care of Sam and never seems to charge enough, so I don't mind him making a few extra bucks on the meds.

Re: Glucosamine for dog\'s aging joints?

Thanks for the discussion guys. It has been most informative. My Dane is coming up to 7 years and the arthitis is starting to have an effect. I want to keep him as comfortable as I can. I weighed him today - 105 Kg. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Howard,

Good looking Dane. I hate to see them hurting. There are a lot of options, talk to your vet. Your buddy will thank you!
