Well I gave the others a try and came back so I am happy for both of you.

Ditto on what builder said. I have been waiting somewhat impatiently for a 3/4 Suburban with a 4.5 liter in it. I have a 2500HD with a Duramax in it right now but it only seats 5. I want something I can take 8 plus pull a trailer.

Technically you haven't had a Cummins powered Dodge RAM yet, or did I miss that post? :D

I wonder how a full-size diesel SUV would sell, the Powerstroke powered Ford Excursion didn't sell much...

No, no Cummins. I would by a 5.9 L Cummins in a truck if it was cheap enough for me to keep the Dodge part together.

Not sure what its like around you but the Excursion is very popular and missed around here. I know quite a few people with them. About 2/3 had the V-10 and a few the diesel. I tried to buy 2 of them last November when my 99 F-350 was totaled by a employee and could not get them to budge off them. I looked at the used market and most had well over 100,000 miles and they still wanted a arm and a leg. The millage scared me off so I ended up with another 1/2 ton truck, the Titan.

IMO: The reason it didn't sell much is because (1) it was founded on the 7.3L Powerstroke which was so flippin loud that a mother of a family couldn't really enjoy driving in it. I'd have to laugh when one would come down my street-you could hear them turning on my street from a 1/2 mile away. When it passed by, it was just as loud as a school bus (almost same engine). Who wants to drive around in a passenger vehicle that's as loud as a school bus? The 6L was...... well, let's just leave it up to the imagination because brand bashing is not allowed (by most members anyways), but I think the loudness of the 7.3 couldn't be overcome by the quieter 6L. (2) I also distinctly remember the tree huggers targeted the Excrusion and the Humvee as the "ultimate gas hogs" and "wastefully oversized" and look where both are now,,,, one's in the scrap heap (Excursion) and the civilian version of the other was sold off by GM. remember the ones on the dealer lots would get burned & spray painted by "ELF"? :confused2:

The sad thing about the Hummer was that they just introduced the Duramax in it (Remember the Hummer "Alpha"?) that was undoubtedly the most ferocious off road vehicle ever built by any car manufacturer and the best part was that it was very quiet inside & out unlike the predecessor.

I would love to have an Alpha Hummer, but would also be very happy with a diesel Suburban. The old venerable Suburban..... Half the football families I coach have them in their garages. What a great legacy the Sub has. Even the biggest GM haters in the world have to take a bow to the 'Burb. :)

I actually have to agree with you Builder. My uncle has a 1997 2500 Burban with a 6.5 TD in it. It is cherry and has less than 90,000 miles. He has a relatively small boat compared to my other 3 uncles at around 9,000# but it does a fantastic job at pulling it. It has a huge fuel tank, something like 50 gallons and will average around 19mpg. The only problems he has had is its on its 3rd injector pump. The last one just failed this year on opening day at the lake. He took the truck the week before to get his boat out of our storage and it ran like a top. He then took it to have it washed and fueled up. It made it almost home and died.

It will not win any races but it does a good job for what it is and will fit in a garage unlike the Excursion. That was one thing many of my friends that have Excursions complain about. I only know one with a 7.3 and do not remember it being overly loud but its been nearly 8 years since I have driven it so maybe it was. The V-10's are really a nice ride but at 12mpg its a killer. Both the ones I know of with the 6.0's have been trouble free except for one EGR valve, again the first week of boating season. That truck, a 2004, has 120,000 plus miles and its the first time its been in the shop plus its paid for. I tried to buy it but he will not sell it. I wanted him to do the EGR valve delete like the later 6.0's but he did not want to modify it.

One crazy thing about the 90's era diesel Suburbans is they have less tow rating than the gas versions. The diesel is limited to 7,500# while the gas is at 10,000#.

Anyway, back to 1/2 tons with a diesel. I really think its going to happen but not sell well. The upfront cost and the already stout tow ratings of the current 1/2 ton gassers will be the killer. I can not see them increasing the tow ratings much more than the 11,000# or so the best of the best 1/2 tons will tow. Yes, having a diesel with low end grunt would be nice but add the extra $$$$$ and it will be a deal killer for most.

I bet they sell like the next coming of the V-8. When I read lots of different truck forums, nearly everyone welcomes them. Very little negative reaction to them.

However, I actually think the large SUV market with a diesel would sell even better than a 1/2 ton pickup.

I don't think they'll intro them with a $6,000 price. My guess is they'll sell them at a special introductory price to get a bunch of them out on the road. Once they see how quiet, smooth & powerful the Duramax is, they'll win over a lot of customers. The current 6.6L duramax has won over so many new customers for GM. I look at myself and some of my other sub contractors that have moved away from other brands to GM/Dmax/Ally and love them.

According Chevy the current 6.0L 3/4 Ton Suburban towing capacity is up to 9600 lbs.

2010 Chevy Suburban | Suburban | SUVs | New SUVs | Chevrolet

The 4.5L engine may get the 11,000 lb. range.

We used to have a 2002 3/4 Ton Suburban with the 6.0L gas, the suspension was stout compared to a 1/2 Ton. I had a tune put it on it because it felt like a pig next to my 5.3L 1/2 ton.

I heard the 8.1L Burb had a 12K towing capacity before its' demise and the 6L version had significantly reduced towing capacity. Would love a 8.1L Burb in 3/4 ton suspension if that's true. :)

Man the 8.1L was a chunk of HP/TQ. It's the only gasser I'd ever own.

The suspension was mostly the light duty 2500 or 1500 HD truck 8 lug axles etc. I did find out that the Emergency brake pads etc. were unique to that vehicle. I miss the kid hauling space, but like the versalility of the 6 passenger crew cab 2500HD that replaced it. The 6.6L and built brake controller are a nice bonus also.

I am not sure if we would be in the market for a new one, but if they drop to 40% their original sticker in 3 years like our '02 did when we purchased it in 2005 I am interested.

I also miss the 39 gallon gas tank compared to the 26 gallon in my 6 1/2' bed diesel truck for towing. Hopefully GM gets this part corrected in the 2011's. I use to be able to run around 300+ miles pulling the camper before stopping.
